Goodbye, Mike
SHORTLY before noon today, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo announced in a speech before businessmen at the Manila Polo Club that her husband, First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, would be leaving the country to “remove himself from any situation that has cast doubt on my presidency.” The First Gentleman has been embroiled in scandal after scandal, the latest of which was the allegation he took money from jueteng operations. In banishing her controversial spouse, the President said her family “is once again called to sacrifice my personal happiness.” This leaves the President alone to face public opinion in the aftermath of her admission Monday that hers was indeed the voice on the “Hello, Garci” tapes.
PCIJ sought the reaction of political activists to the latest damage-control measure by Malacañang. Several of them had gathered this morning at the U.P. Bahay ng Alumni to launch a movement called Laban ng Masa aimed at ridding the country not just of President Arroyo but also of the elite as well. Here are some of the comments.
Joel Rocamora, Institute for Popular Democracy Good step pero dapat sarhan na rin ni Gloria yung mga gripo. Dapat patalsikin na rin ni Gloria ang mga tauhan ni Mike sa Pagcor, sa NAIA, sa DPWH kasi yun yung mga gripo ni Mike. Dapat sarhan na rin nya yun. (She should close the faucet. She should cut off the source. She should also remove Mike’s henchmen in Pagcor, NAIA, DPWH because they Mike’s faucets, Mike’s source.) Whether that will staunch the political bleeding of the administration, it’s hard to say. But it will not appease this group (democratic left). No way. Because what this group is after is not anymore si Gloria, sa totoo lang. It’s not anymore sinong papalit kay Gloria at sa anong paraan. Ang habol na ng grupong ito at sang ayon naman talaga ako is baguhin na ang systema. Kasi yung na ang hinihiling ng tao eh. (This group is no longer just after getting rid of Gloria. It’s no longer who will replace her and how. What this group wants, and I agree with them, is a change in the system because that’s what people want.)
Millet Morante, Secretary-General, Kilusan para sa Pambansang Demokrasya That signals something, yung pag-alis ni Mike. I think they anticipate something from the people. Sa palagay ko, yun ay pag-secure ng first family ng kanilang mga sarili pagkat alam nilang guilty sila. So sa palagay ko dapat sundan ng mamamayan yung mga signal na nakikita tulad ng pamilyang ito, laluna rehimeng ito para tuluy tuloy ang moral high ground. Nasa moral high ground kasi ang mamamayan. So I think pag-amin din yun na itong klase ng bistuhang nangyari ay katotohanan at takot na takot na si GMA sa galit ng mamamayan. But I think ang talagang kailangan umalis ay si GMA. Sundan na niya yung mga pamilya nya dun. Habang ganyan siya wala siyang puwang sa Pilipinas. (I think this means they’re trying to secure the first family because they know they’re guilty. The people should watch these signals closely to maintain the high ground. Right now, it’s the people who are on a moral high ground. Mike’s departure is also an admission that they’ve been found out, and that GMA is afraid of the people’s wrath. I think it is GMA herself who should leave. She should follow her family out of the country. There’s no space for her in the Philippines.)

And number two, the impression of people is that it’s the first step toward an exit so she sends Mike to America for Mike to look after their deposits and their transfer of accounts, transfer of funds. And I think you know in many ways she’s already in a state of panic. Can the situation be salvageable for her? I think if she failed to convince us with her put-on repentance last Monday evening, she’s also now failing to convince us that the exit of her husband is for the good of the people. It’s really for her own good because she obviously realizes that the end is coming very soon.

It might appease those who like to think that the problem is Mike. But from the tapes it’s very clear. She was giving orders to her commissioner to fix the election results. She has to deport herself.

personal happines??… happy ba syang nakikita yun araw-araw, gabi-gabi??… geesh.
what are the implications of him leaving anyway?… will the jueteng payoff investigation still involve him?… why doesn’t anyone open the Jose Pidal issue again?… maybe it’s time that issue reached a conclusion. Baka doon lumalabas-pasok yung money… whatever.
Pano yung iba pa nyang kabulastugan na pinaggagawa?… at ang mga kampon nya ay dapat din nyang “walisin”, lalong-lalo na yung mga “binigyan” nila ng startegic positions sa gobyerno…
Howel… hindi sinabi ng Diyos na isa sa marriage vows mo e “stand by your man” kahit mali na ang ginagawa nya at nakakapwerwisyo lang sya sa marriage nyo, sa pamilya mo at sa mga tao sa paligid.
i strongly feel that Mike’s leaving is not equivalent to what the “doves” advised as making him “disappear”.

anyway, seriously, i hate to sound really sarcastic kasi wala namang mapapala ang pagdaldal ko dito. Pero sobra lang talaga siya/silang nakakapanginig ng laman.
i sincerely pray that God do something to them at this very moment. I dunno what, God has always been the best judge. Maybe a sign. Maybe a really devastating eye-opener. whatever. At the rate they’re going, i have no idea anymore what they can endure. pero wag nilang asahang magiging “gentle” ang lessons na ituturo ng kasaysayan sa kanila.
wag na silang makipagsabayan sa problema ng mundo sa langis, please lang… all the more that i feel that the Filipino people find a solution to this Gloria problem, and find it NOW. We are facing a more vulnerable future and time is running out.
Kung magmamatigas pa si Glo at ang mga galamay niya, we’re just letting them waste precious time.

Folks may be getting ahead of themselves in declaring an objective of getting rid not only of GMA “but of the elite as well” … either that or PCIJ was putting words in their mouth.
The Soviet Union, and various “people’s republics” in China, Cuba and North Korea conducted nearly a century long experiment in society’s devoted to that same objective. They only succeeded in creating TOTALITARIAN elites that failed just as miserably, if not worse than other “elites”.
I doubt that the motley crew of “political activists” you interviewed will succeed where V.I. Lenin, Mao Tsetung, Fidel Castro and the North Korean with the weirdo haircut, failed miserably.
I’m still for the flawed but corrigible system that has proven itself best as an evolutionary competitor against fascism, communism and terrorism::liberal democracy.

We should challenge DOJ thru its Bureau of I,,igration to issue HDO and pressure GMA to order DFA for the cancellation of their passports to limit their movement. It is their attempt to escape prosecution and the hatred of the people.

i don’t think ms.arroyo is afraid of people power and being kicked out of office.
it happened to marcos. but hey, the marcos loot is still with them, bongbong and imee are still in power. imelda even had the chance to run for office, the presidency at that!… irene is still filthy rich (though symepre mayaman naman talaga yung asawa nya)… basta the point is wala naman sign of remorse.
then it happened to erap. heller, naka-upo pa rin sa pwesto sina jv, jinggoy, loi… mayaman pa rin naman si laarni a, mukhang di naman siya nag-lielow na luxurious living nila. si erap naka-house arrest… asus!
pag nagpeople power ekek tayo, sasabihin nila baka nabigyan lang tayo ng burger steak.
ewan. kelangan ibahin naman ng mga Pilipino ang style ng pagpapakita na ayaw na natin. yung masisindak sila. yung hindi sila prepared.

Kagabi ko lang nakita segment ng kanyang Monday speech. Grabeh pala ang galing ng kanyang posturing sa camera. May angle ang mukha hindi straight. Ang make-up naka-concentrate para ma-expose ang mga fake na teary-eyes. The pauses in her speech seems choreographed.
Then yung announcement ng pagalis ni fafa-BEAR. Same tone, same tearied-eyes.
Bagay talaga si Gloria sa Quaipo… mukhang pirated.
Aba naku! Kung sakaling malagpasan nya ito? Ay sus! Makikita mo na namn ang pagka-arrogante nyan. Mga maaanghang na speech.

For FG Mike to leave the country does not do anything good for the country. Mike has all the galamay in government so he just have to wait for them to deposit thru his bank accounts. Besiides wherever you are now, you can do (monkey) business from any part of the world. In fact mas nakakabuti pa yun sa kanila dahil kung may pumalpak na gagawin sila, FG Mike cannot be blamed.
But the the core of the issue is Mike is not simply the problem here. As if we are saying that Ate Glo is ok if Mike is not around. The reason why there are issues against Mike is because Glo allows it to happen and he cannot control Mike but rather Mike controls him. So the best thing for Ate Glo to do is if she is not in control, she might as well resign and join Mike travel abroad and join our OFWs in Iraq.
Sama sama na lang sila. Good riddance for the First Family.

Whether Mike will go on exile or not is immaterial by now. Mike have committed his share of kapalpakan for the past years Ate Glo have been in Malacanang.
The issues now is no longer our perception of Mike’s arrogance and influence peddling. Tapos na yun. The issue now is about GMA and her morality.
She committed the gravest political blunder known in Philippine history and there is no way she can ever redeem herself from the eyes of the Filipino people. She will forever be known as the president, who in the words of Mrs. Roces, “stole the presidency”

And because Ate Glow is a devoted Catholic, I suggest that she go to Quiapo Church at humingi siya ng tawad sa Panginoon. Pwede siyang maglakad paluhod mula sa Plaza Miranda hanggang sa Alter ng Quiapo Church.
Baka sakali tanggapin ni Lord ang pagpapatawad sa kanya.
At pagkatapos do a self-impose penance by joining Mike in his exile.

Mas naniniwala ako sa mga sinabi ni Mrs. Poe sa TV kesa sa mga sinabi ng isang dwendeng me nunal sa mukha na nung isang linggo lang eh ang taray taray sa TV at yurakan ang katalinuhan ng mga gustong mag-rally nung June 24. Isabay pa daw sa Araw ng Maynila??? Then what. Siya ngayon ang hindi magkandarapa sa pagdradrama sa harap ng madla para makakuha ngayon ng awa. Ang bilis bumaligtad ng mundo noh? Isinama pa sa drama ang asawa at anak para lalung high powered lead cast nga naman ang sci-fi na movie hehehe kasi ba naman sasakay ng eroplano at di pa kasi space ship. Sana the end na agad para makapag-change na ng channel ang mga pinoy.

Maski naman nasa malayo si Mike, he can still influence what’s going on in the Philippines. Tawagan lang niya ang mga tauhan niya, para na rin silang langaw na mas mayabang pa sa amo. Do you think someone from the goverment will say no to the Mike’s amoyong. Kung ang mga congressmen (majority) ay naniwalang hindi boses ni Gloria ang nasa tape iyong pa kayang ordinaryong goverment employee who can be forced to resign at any time? Kaya ayaw umalis ni Iggy kasi he is not as influencial as his brother. What a sacrifice, Madam President.

truckloads of government have been moved out of malacanang to gma’s residence in la vista. preparation for an exit? mike’s trip to sanfo isn’t really sacrificial at all. they just want to be ready when the inevitable comes. by sheer coincidence or what, mike went to hongkong while noli was also visiting the colony. word hat it that the two met to discuss gloria’s exit scenario replete with mike’s promise of convincing the supreme court justices to swear noli in and noli’s commitment to let gloria go to exile without possible criminal charges and without extradition too!

On pp. 105 to 106:
In Iloilo in 1929, the king of jueteng was a Chinese named Luis Sane, widely known as Sualoy. He operated with impunity; his establishments were safe from raids; secured, it was said, by generous bribe money to politicians and the local police.
In September 1929, Ening [Lopez] and El Tiempo began a crusade against jueteng in Iloilo and the corruption it created in local government. The winning number each day was printed in a box in boldface on page one. Ening came out with one expose after another, alleging that top politicians such as Iloilo Governor Mariano Arroyo, Iloilo City police chief Marcelo Buenaflor and his brother Congressman Tomas Buenaflor, had been bribed by Sualoy to turn a blind eye on jueteng.
Ening did not choose lightweight opponents. Mariano Arroyo was the most powerful man in the province. He was the brother of the late Jose Arroyo, a Nacionalista senator and good friend of Quezon. As the public’s outrage over the corruption began to mount, Arroyo issued a statement that jueteng did not exist in Iloilo. That it did and that local officials benefited from it were matters of public knowledge in the city. The question was not what needed to be done, but who had the courage to do it. As it turned out, Ening Lopez did.
In March 1930, due to the pressure created by El Tiempo, Sualoy’s headquarters was finally raided; not by the do-nothing local police, but the Philippine Constabulary. Sualoy was arrested, found guilty and jailed. He was eventually deported and died in China. With Sualoy out, the conflict had narrowed to a match between ElTiempo and the governor. The crusade had captured the imagination of Iloilo and made El Tiempo the city’s leading newspaper. In August 1930, pushed against the wall, Governor Arroyo sued El Tiempo for libel. Ening struck back by filing administrative charges against the governor. He also called in his friend and former boss Vicente Francisco to lead his defense against the libel charge.
As the struggle intensified, some Lopezes sensed in it some unwelcome echoes of the political tempest that had taken the life of Ening’s father (Benito Lopez) 22 years before. El Tiempo’s editor, Jose Magalona, was badly beaten by a local thug who was believed to be in the employ of the governor’s men. The older Lopezes were afraid that as the row grew more heated, Ening might eventually share his father’s fate.
Fortunately, news of the case had reached Manila and attracted the attention of (American) Governor General Dwight F. Davis. Governor Arroyo and his cohorts came under minute scrutiny. As a result of the scandal, the Nacionalistas and Quezon began backing away from Arroyo. When Arroyo asked Quezon to recommend to Davis that he be acquitted of the administrative charges filed by Lopez, Quezon refused. Instead, Davis swiftly dispatched Judge Manuel Moran (later chief justice of the Supreme Court), to investigate the libel case. Moran established that Arroyo and the police chief were in fact heavily involved in illegal gambling. They even ran a gambling den as a means of generating money for the upcoming 1931 elections. Moran concluded that Ening and El Tiempo had not been guilty of libel.
In Arroyo’s trial on the administrative charges, even more damning evidence against the governor came out. Pio Sian Melliza, a boyhood friend and active supporter of the governor, testified that when he had asked his friend to finally crack down on jueteng, the governor told him:
Compadre, why are you so determined to get rid of jueteng gambling? Isn’t it clear to you that most of the jueteng runners and sellers are our own political ward leaders? The elections are nearing, and I am running for re-election. Not including the money they are giving us for election expenses, they can hurt us in this election, because there are many of these jueteng runners in this province.
On October 7, 1930, Governor General Dwight F. Davis ordered Governor Mariano Arroyo relieved of his post for corruption. Timoteo Consing,
a friend of Ening, was named as his replacement. Iloilo Mayor Eulogio Garganera and Marcelo Buenaflor were suspended. The ex-governor staged a protest rally and attempted to make a political comeback, but his disgrace had been marked and he sank into obscurity.
Now, a postscript to history —
Don Mariano Arroyo, the disgraced governor of Iloilo who was dismissed by the American governor-general for being a jueteng protector and coddler, had a brother, Jose Arroyo y Pidal. He is the grandfather of Atty. Jose Miguel Arroyo y Tuason, the so-called First Gentleman, being the husband of the President of the Republic, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Jose Miguel, whose nickname is Mike, has a younger brother, Jose Ignacio Arroyo, who is now a congressman of Negros Occidental.
