WITH the ongoing House hearings on the taped conversations involving Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, we are also making available for download the audio files of the versions that Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye released to the Malacañang Press Corps, as well as the one that Sen. Panfilo Lacson has asked the Australian forensic audio specialist UniQuest Pty Limited to authenticate:

  • Bunye “Original” — 1 | 2 | 3 | 4
  • Bunye “Spliced” — 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
  • Lacson Version — 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

I am an Engr as well a computer programmer, Uniquest Pty Limited results are true. I have done some voice splicing in my Telecom Company auto voice attendant, and we use high end software for voice splicing.

I believe its an easy job in voice splicing in cases the background is silent, but when there is background sound splicing also can be done, but by careful study of voice spectrum you can see there are jumps in the frequency of the background noises, since background sounds is in another frequencies.

I believe La Presidentia Gloria have consulted Voice Proffesionalist, I think he ask for advise if its possible she can declare its not her voice, but sad to say those proffesionals cannot guarantee that results from abroad voice audio forensic will deny her.

Gloria steps in publishing the tape to Bunye is a big error, and i think they does not consult audio proffesionals on it, or if ever they have consulted these audio proffionals do they part in splicing, and dont guarantee the other tape, since they can not splice them. Why? maybe because their cd they got maybe on a 1000th copy.

Oh I remember the Media Optical Law, that prohibits CD copying and distribution of Optical writer, well if only they have implement it strictly maybe the cd distribution will not be much faster and more broad. at leasr the heat built up on tape will be not so fast, that now they are burning.

One congressman says, when you copy cd, it is seems the same on original, since it is digital. Yes I believe it but congress doesnt believe it, what they believe are the roll tapes, are the originals. after all its all the same. and its no use to argue on it since La Presidentia already own it… But what version she own?

yung kay bunye, ginawa sa malacañang… sabi nga nya.. we kept record of the communications of the president. thats why they have an original version.

akala niya na wire tap si GMA.

d nya alam, si Garci ang nawiretap.

biktima lang si gma.

mali ni bunye,…. inadvertize nya kaya tuloy pati ako… nagbabasa dito at nagfofollow up. he he he

To Butch….
Is anyone still interested in investigating and establishing

(1) who ordered the wiretapping in the first place,

I think GMA was not the target to wiretap, It is Garcillano, since you hear all the calls comes and receive by Garcillano. So the best question is who wiretap Garcillano? and following answers will follow: Maybe Comelec, Oppositions, FBI, NBI.. tapping Garcillano is like tapping his superiors who he/she is? Its like Garcillano is just a small fish a bait to get the bigger fish.

(2) who among the players in the present crisis knew of the existence of the tapes and when,

I think people in Intelligence knows it already, it maybe politics that cause the leak of this tape like sammy ong. disgruntled for the position maybe, and know he released the tape since he know this is the best time.

(3) who finally leaked the tapes, and

I believe the tape was tap by Cell Companies, as an ECE engr. I know there is no available machine in tapping GSM phones directly. Even you searched GSM wiretap you can not find tapping machine that can directly catch the voice by air. GSM technology is a very encrypted technology.

And lets say even if it is exist, does the wiretapper follows garcillano all the way from manila to mindanao to tap? O cmon… Theres also a conversation in the 3 hour tape that Garcillano is in Robinsons Handyman, does it means the wiretapper follows him.

(4) to whom?

I dont know to whom, if I know this I can be a popular…

Ho hum. As usual, Pinoys are making a big fuss over such an all-too-typical Pinoy-style presidential debacle (the makings of which ultimately originate from our ridiculously tolerant character as a society).

Check out our newest article for some truly refreshing insight on this matter.

The fall of a philosopher-king

Excerpt:
Conveniently, Ms. Arroyo has since been “re-elected” constitutionally (something possible in a nation that loosely defines the term) in 2004. Or has she? That question is now the buzz of 2005 — another one of those all-too-common things that distract the Pinoy from that elusive job of nation building (remember the concept? Not.). That little after-the-fact legalisation of the 2003 power grab that we thought had been neatly swept under the rug (a la tapal Vulcaseal) is something worth bringing up now as the nation lurches towards another dose of its favourite laxative — Fiesta Revolution! We need to remind ourselves yet again that we in fact not only deserve each other, we deserve the Philippine Government.

Tama na tsismisan. Trabaho na. Kaya namumulubi ang bansa e. Panay tayo pulitika.

Are you sure GSM is encrypted? Come on GSM is very easy to wiretap. Lacson used to have one or more of those devices when he used to work in one of those Task Forces. GSM is just simple tdma with compression. A digital radio scanner and then a computer to sort out the frames then voila! Come on its just one of eight frequencies you have to watch out for you have to be in the same cell site though but hey a cell site is big its not difficult if yopu keep the target in sight! CDMA is more sophisticated than that.

A bug in the phone would be simpler and more effective though. I think somebody had it in for Arroyo long before the election started. The guys who installed the wiretap knows the person or group of persons who fixes the elections and bugged all their phones. Thats why we need to know who set the whole operation. And who paid them and what their deals are. We need to know if ‘Garci’ himself is involved because if he is then that means he cut a deal with those who are going into power. Then come next election we get cheated again.

Wiretaps and bugs are cool. There is no better way to ensure transparency. Let us bug all of them.

Consider a Laser or a gun microphone. You can buy them in Hong Kong! Or you can build one! A small group can pool their funds then buy the components. Imagine what a group of Senators can do with their pork if they pooled it!

I would not hesitate to bug people I know just to make sure thay are not doing any monkey business. How much more politicians!

i don’t think ms.arroyo is afraid of people power and being kicked out of office.

it happened to marcos. but hey, the marcos loot is still with them, bongbong and imee are still in power. imelda even had the chance to run for office, the presidency at that!… irene is still filthy rich (though symepre mayaman naman talaga yung asawa nya)… basta the point is wala naman sign of remorse.

mabuti na rin na available yung version ni bunye, because they will be needed as evidence vs Bunye and company na pineke nila ang original tape, resulting in two fake malacanang versions (even though he called one of his tapes “original”, heh…) to coverup GLORIAGATE and confuse the public (didn’t work).

Gangster Roger,

Can you give me a website where there is proof GSM Technology can be tap on air? its easy to quote but hard to prove, eventhough it exist does it mean the tapper follows Garci all over mindanao to the robinsons in manila, one of the calls there are located in Robinsons, and from time to time Garci is moving fast.

Smartcard Developer Association Clones Digital GSM Cellphones
Dateline: 2300 Hrs 13 April 1998 PRESS RELEASE FROM SDA

San Francisco, Monday, 13 April 1998. The Smartcard Developer Association (SDA) and two U.C. Berkeley researchers jointly announced today that digital GSM cellphones are susceptible to cloning, contrary to the belief of even the telecommunication providers that have fielded them. GSM (Groupe Spéciale Mobile) is the most widely used cellphone standard in the world, with more than 79 million GSM phones in use worldwide. In contrast, there are about 58 million U.S cellphone users of all kinds both analog and digital, including some GSM.

Serious Implications, Possible Remedies

Almost all GSM network operators are vulnerable to the new breach. There are replacements for COMP128 permitted in the GSM system, but so far the SDA has not found a network which does not use COMP128. The SDA is currently in the process of determining which cellular networks are vulnerable. Nor are U.S. companies immune. Many U.S. networks use GSM standards in their offerings of digital PCS service, Pacific Bell among them. Indeed, it was a SIM signed up to the Pacific Bell PCS service that the ISAAC group successfully attacked.

Gone In 60 Seconds
GSM Phone Hack Recovers Key In One Second
0630 Hrs 07 December 1999

A paper by Alex Biryukov and Adi Shamir to be published soon outlines a method to recover the key for an encrypted GSM conversation in less than a second using a PC with 128 MB of RAM and 73 GB of hard drive space.

The security of GSM phone technology a sieve. In 1998, Marc Briceno, Ian Goldberg and David Wagner demostrated that it was possible to clone GSM simcards. The hack occurred because the critical algorithms are flawed and it is possible to dump the contents of the simcard and emulate it using a PC. This latest problem could render GSM phone conversations totally insecure.

The paper describes an attack which exploits subtle flaws in the algorithm which may have been apparent if the algorithm had been available for peer review. The GSM MOU had developed the algorithms in secret relying on the discredited “security by obscurity” approach. This approach is certain to guarantee that a failure in security will be a most public event. The attack analyses the out put of the A5/1 algorithm during the first two minutes of a conversation

The attack uses the unofficial description of the A5/1 algorithm, released in May 1999, that appeared on the Smartcard Developer Association web site and on John Young’s Cryptonym archive.

An Israeli scientific team has found a way to break into mobile phone calls on ubiquitous GSM networks, potentially allowing eavesdroppers to listen in on conversations and even take on a caller’s identity.

The GSM Association, representing companies which depend on the world’s largest mobile system, which is used by more than 860 million consumers in 197 countries, confirmed the security hole but said it would be expensive and complicated to exploit.

Professor Eli Biham of the Technion Institute in Haifa said he was shocked when doctoral student Elad Barkan told him he had found a fundamental error in the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) code.

“We can listen in to a call while it is still at the ringing stage and within a fraction of a second know everything about the user,” Biham said. “Then we can listen in to the call.”

“Using a special device it’s possible to steal calls and impersonate callers in the middle of a call as it’s happening,” he said. GSM code writers made a mistake in giving high priority to call quality, correcting for noise and interference, and only then encrypting, Biham said. Snooping on mobile calls was fairly simple with analog networks, but since the advent of digital technology like GSM in the early 1990s this has become much harder. Currently law enforcers and other government agencies can break into calls, only by using special equipment that starts at $250,000, said security expert Motti Golan, owner of Spy-Shop in Tel Aviv.

The new approach found by the Israeli scientists was different and could pose a threat, he said. “In the hands of terrorists this would be a disaster, but I don’t see how they could get access to it,” said Golan, a former police detective. The researchers said they would help the GSM Association to fix the hole.

The method will be patented and usage will be restricted to law enforcement agencies, Biham said.

The GSM Association said the security holes in the GSM system stemmed from its development in the late 1980s when computing power was still limited, but that this particular gap could only be exploited with complex and expensive technology and that it would take a long time to target individual callers.

“This (technique) goes further than previous academic papers, (but) it is nothing new or surprising to the GSM community. The GSM Association believes that the practical implications of the paper are limited,” it said in a statement. GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, accounts for 72 percent of the world’s digital mobile phone market and 70 percent of the global wireless (news – web sites) market, the GSM association said.

GMA should uses CDMA 3G Phones….

NTC should look up on this, and demand more encryption on GSM…

Because if this Cell Companies can not guarantee security, they have no right to do business in telecommunications…

Well for further listening the Wiretap tape, I have heard ringing tones ringing so for this conclusion, Ive conclude that someone clone the GSM sim card.

Im sorry for concluding Cell Companies it maybe not them, Gangster Roger youre right….For cell companies, ive request to create a more encrypted technology to secure voice calls.

wow thats a lot! i did not know that encryption is being studied for gsm. but still if you look at the implementation it is still expensive to secure gsm traffic.

compared to cdma. security is already inherent in the radio transmission itself. thats why almost all military digital radios trunked or not use cdma and frequency hopping in some form.

the possibility of cloning garci’s phone is very real. but another simpler explanation is garci himself recorded the conversation. then when the time comes he confesses to doing the recording and be hailed a hero and becomes the chairman of the comelec. then the next election comes…

So the most important question is who made the recording. Im not sure its really a wiretap. We need to examine the evidence. People lie all the time but the evidence dont.

Yes I watch CSI. And House.

eh sino yung gumawa ng recording? gusto ko tanungin kung ano narinig nya.

If a cloned phone was used that might mean a team of people followed him around. that means a major surveillance operation. who are these people? what did they hear? we need to know everything they heard.

now we have more people who know something and they are not telling us. I really really hate that! now we have people with more power because they withold information. hah. now they are above common people like you and me and can take advantage. i really hate that!

Now consider Garci recording his own conversations on the phone. Now where is his library? OMG! Thats a power multiplier! If Someone gets hold of it!

If I you get hold of it what would you do? Now I have to ask you. Are you a good man? Are you going to have it published? what if it was your cousin in the recordings? You suddenly ask him for employment? Or maybe ask him for help paying your mother’s hospital bills? Should you tell somebody else? Are those the same questions Paguia and Ong have to face? If nobody else knew you have garci’s library then its hard not to use it for your own good right?

Now if Ong and Paguia heard some of it. heheh! i could imagine the two with a cannon pointed at their head or a kilo of plastic explosive in their rectums. I dont envy them at all. Im not naive enough to believe that the opposition can do no wrong. They know something about the opposition too. Now if GMA is removed. Hah! We will see!
