IN THE strongest statement yet to come from the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales lays down the basic principles by which, he says, the Filipino people must proceed to solve the current political crisis. The Archbishop begins by saying, "the offended cannot simply be consoled by expressions of regret."

Speaking four days after President Arroyo’s apology, the church leader says forgiveness "should not block the search for truth." He ends with a reminder for people to remain calm, and not to give in to despair.

The Unity We Need

"The power of God brought it about that the people were of one mind to carry out the command … in accordance with the word of the Lord." (2 Chronicles 30:12)

Once again, we, Filipinos, find ourselves going through very hard times. Many are poor, hungry, searching for a better life for themselves and their families. If only we would just focus our minds and hearts, and work together to find solutions to the poverty that has not ceased to plague us, we might find ourselves moving forward as a nation. Instead, our national attention and energies are taken up by division and altercations. Serious charges have been made against our leaders and officials. Despite expressions of regret, many remain angry, confused, hurt. In this situation, as your shepherd and pastor, I wish to call to mind fundamental principles that should govern our search for solutions to our present crisis.

First, let us remember that the offended cannot simply be consoled by expressions of regret. Forgiveness does not eliminate the need for justice, nor should it block the search for truth. Genuine forgiveness demands more than an apology, and those who seek forgiveness should be ready to be called to accountability.

Second, the pursuit of truth regarding the grave charges against leaders and officials should be conducted within the provisions of our Constitution and should respect the laws of the land. Any proposition that disregards our constitutional and legal systems weakens our institutions and paves the way for a graver instability that can cause more profound suffering to our people.

Third, any proposed solution to our present situation that relies on or leads to violence is unacceptable. Violence harms the innocent and inflicts wounds so deep that will take generations to heal.

Fourth, we ask our leaders to give our people hope, by giving immediate attention to authentic reform. Political systems that are prone to corruption must be swiftly and decisively reformed, and institutions built that can effectively respond to the aspirations of our people for a better life.

Finally, in these confusing times when people are easily swayed by emotions and led astray by quick-fix solutions, may cooler heads prevail. Let true lovers of the Filipino people come together to discern carefully before God, what is truly for the immediate and long-run good of our country. Let us not fall easy prey to those self-seeking politicians from all the different political parties, who have held the country’s future hostage to their own ambitions, and have brought us to where we sadly find ourselves today.

Let us not also give in to despair, seeing only what is wrong in our country, when there is, in truth, so much that is good done daily by Filipinos from all walks of life to build up the nation. Our recurring problems of political instability may cause us to lose hope, but if we humbly accept that we are all sinners in need of conversion, it will be easier for us to unite.

I ask then that, in these times of uncertainty, we join in fervent prayer and prayerful reflection, that the Lord show us the way forward, as He has done in the past, and that He may give us yet another chance to be one. Let us place our trust in His continued love and care for our people, especially those who are poor. May our Blessed Mother find joy in the Filipino people, for she loves to see us listen to her Son.

Gaudencio B. Rosales, D.D., Archbishop of Manila (signed)

“Resignation is constitutional.” — Cory Aquino, Nov 2000

1. Listen to the “Hello Garci” tapes or read the transcripts.
2. Ask yourself whether you care to have GMA as president
3. Join your voice to the calls for GMA’s resignation
4. Remember: resignation is constitutional

is that a pastoral letter of the Archbishop of Manila? Is there a need to include the Bishops of the Metropolitan Province of Manila in the letter? Can’t the Archbishop alone by himself be authoritative or forceful enough?

i think half of the message is addressed to G.Arroyo. the other half just describes the failure of past administration and the church to do good by its people. the archbishop is asking the people to accept the status quo, to be patient and suffer a little more.

a few more decades of this type of messages and some bishops might be shot. the catholic church should learn the lessons of history in the catholic dominated countries in south america.

Bishop Rosales,
Please listen to the tapes. Let those people going to the church listen to it during the mass. There are lessons to be learned here. You can use this as your homily on what is morally right. The contents are of very vital issure here.

In fairness to the Archbishop they need to be partial.

Its sort of like a forced speech that was asked by the situation and they need an official communicae. What is lacking is the direct request to the personalities involved in this scandal. We all know who they were: Mrs. Arroyo, Garcilliano, Barbers, and different Comelec officials and staff, the Military and PNP.

What I hate about the letter of Archbishop Rosales is that it ONLY offers a BLANKET appeal fro the situation. Just like a narrator in a play who does not want to be involved but by virtue of his position must need to address the public.

My apeal then to Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales, like what others want, is for you to listen and study the tapes. Adn then directly confront Mrs. Gloria Arroyo for her to address the issues presented in the tape.

That is moving forward. Not a BLANKET appeal.

How I wish we could have access to God like this Lady in Malacañang who once claimed that God suggested for her to make a sacrifice and run for the Presidency. By the way, shouldn’t the Archbishop comment on this instead–GMA’s supposedly being the chosen one? Hay… How can a Church truly espouse democracy if it is selective in its commentaries?

Democracy is a fragile thing.

History suggests that especially in a country whose experience with western democratic institutions is but half a century old, things like the so-called Gloriagate scandal could come to pass.

Since 1986, we have been consolidating and deepening democracy in this nation. We rewrote the Constitution. Passed a Local Government Code. Conducted numerous elections. Even unseated a hugely popular President. Still, there are treacherous waters that we must tread.

To some, it would seem that democracy is showing itself to be a failed attempt in this country.

But we cannot lose hope. We cannot let an individual’s “lapse in judgment” be the start of our collective lapse in judgment. The ball is now with all of us, as it were.

The course of action that we must take should, in the final analysis, only strengthen democracy and not endanger it.

Democracy has to be promoted with the interest of the Filipino people foremost in our minds.

Our democratic values are once again being put to a test. Democracy and any other governmental arrangement ultimately rests on legitimacy. And it is precisely the legitimacy of the current national leadership which is now in question.

The Lady in Malacañang and the Church must be reminded: The people will protect their interest if necessary—the two Edsa uprisings are proof of this. Malacañang should not further test the people’s resolve to change things radically if need be.

Let the people’s will be done.

Resign.

Democracy is but a fragile flower.

One can usually tell where a particular media outlet stands on a complex issue by the spin they give to statements of influential personalities. In the case of Archbishop Rosales’ statement, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, chose to put in its Breaking News section that:

When i was asked if i believe in Karma i answered “No i dont believe in any of that B.S. because if it were true then this country is well off right now.”

When asked if i believe in divine justice i answered “No because if it is proven to be divine then at least there should be a divine hand behind all these where all shall see and those who sinned against another shall be metted with the right punishment accordingly as could be assessed directly by the victim. Not in the next life but now.”

When asked if there is a God i answered ” Is that a trick question? look around you, look at our country we have been full of God ever since and we have called him a lot of times yet what do we get in return? We have left in his hands everything we asked and hope for leaving it all to prayer but not doing anything about it. we only call upon him but we never practice his sense of justice nor charity. we preach about Jesus but we never try to imitate his actions so whats the use of the church? and why do they accept criminals in their ranks? i dont see God anymore in any of these i only see people using God for their own ends.”

when asked if this letter would do any good for the Filipino people i answered; “the letter is good if only to be used as a homily in a mass a prayer perhaps because there exists no process of how we are to know what the Lord or the divine mother thinks about the situation, only a never ending question of when and how we would know that we should do the right things that is of course better left to the people of God or church leaders. sadly this letter never empowers the people. it gives them a sense of illusionary hope in the form of admonition.”

one should really be careful in reading newspapers. the inquirer of late has been editing the news. they reported the phenomenon of the 3 hour tape too late in the game. it had been posted at least 2 weeks already in this site before they quoted it in their news section. the opinion section though gave glimpses of the tapes. of course you wont get anything about it from the likes of doronila (an ambassador to brussels hopeful and cunanan, yung naki-angkas sa chartered flight to rome). i know of people asking the inquirer why they have yet to report on the 3 hour tapes when it was already going around the internet. for weeks the tapes that were in their news section were just the paguia and bunye’s conjured version.

So how can we really fight for the “Thruth”. GMA controls all the resources namely, DOJ, NBI, MAKATI group, ISAFP, Government funds, recently the BIR,. etc..
The only structure that they can’t control is the Internet arena.

question…. bakit nakikialam ang church sa politika? during the time of Jesus Christ, di Siya nakiaalam sa pamumuno ni Julius Ceasar. ang Kanyang mission ay maniwala sa Kanya ang mga tao para maligtas sa kasamaan.

Well the reason THE Philippine Daily Inquirer gives bias reporting is simple. They almost closed the paper when advertisers boycotted them during Erap’s time. They surely learned from it. That’s one reason they don’t have sympathy for the opposition. So they will make sure their articles would suit GMA well. It has lost its fearless journalism. Sorry Inquirer you lost it.

Bishop Rosales got it right. He’s got five points to make, and for sure the ones with the most impact (as must have been intended) are the first and the last points:

1. Forgiveness is OK but people should also look at accountability (obviously Arroyo’s).
2. We should not be swayed by “self-seeking” politicians from both parties (But since it is the opposition that is trying to sway the people to do something, this point obviously refers to them).

The Bishop is not letting PGMA off the hook. In fact, accountability is a tough word directed to a sitting president. Yet, he is at the same time strongly warning us not to jump into the fire, too. The present political opposition is not working for the people but for their own selfish agenda.

The guidance from the bishop is very clear. In fact, these two valid points should be spoken in one breath if not at the same time. Many people who jump all over the president, either to defend or attack her are not working for the country. They are part of the two opposing camps trying to perpetuate or to grab their turn to suck the blood out of our people.

For a while there I thought, just like Gloria’s apology, Archbishop Rosales’ pronouncement came a little too late. I said this because the second principle of the statement that calls for respect in the Constitution sounded like an echo of her holiness’ statement, Cory Aquino.

No question the first principle is a special delivery for Malacanang and it is a sign that the Catholic Church is slowly distancing itself from the administration. It’s about time Father.

Anyway, as always, the Church’s pronouncements are made up of issues concerning the poor, the government and its officers, oppressors and the oppressed, prayers and all that and I’m all for it and I say amen to Archbishop Rosales. One thing I noticed though is that it did not include people that are best described as wolves in sheep’s clothing, those popish than the pope, those opportunists in yellow clothing that thrive in situations we’re in right now. In other words, the Church did not the mention anything about the hypocrites in our midst.

These modern day demons that usually comes out when their turf is under threat are now very visible. But since most of the time they rub elbows with church people they were able to camouflage their true agenda. They’ll stop at nothing, even co-opting the church, just to make sure their hold for power is maintained.

Maybe next time the Church should focus on these people.

Gaudencio Rosales may not be another Cardinal Sin — we should give him the benefit of this doubt until he proves himself otherwise. I am surprised to find myself in substantial agreement with his five stated “fundamental principles.” Although the line about staying within the bounds of the Constitution has been the thump of Malacanang drumbeating, it is a principled stand that does not at the same time uphold Edsa Dos as “Constitutional” in the same way that Cory Aquino said it was. This is an important difference. Also, his first point, that there can be no apology without accountability, no forgiveness without justice and the truth being revealed–this cannot but put fear in the hearts of the President’s men, for it sends a powerful signal that they cannot hope to find cover under friar skirts this time around. This may be the stroke that breaks the logjam among her allies and causes them to abandon the circled wagon train.

Tama si Bishop sa sinabi niya:

“First, let us remember that the offended cannot simply be consoled by expressions of regret. Forgiveness does not eliminate the need for justice, nor should it block the search for truth. Genuine forgiveness demands more than an apology, and those who seek forgiveness should be ready to be called to accountability.”

Let us remember that Bishop Rosales, represents the Church at natural we expect a conservative call to action. Our consitution after all provides all the avenues for people action at kasama na dito ang people power as a legal and constitutional course of action. Otherwise the people power 2 could have been rendered unconstitional by the Supreme Court.

The frustration of the Church is further aggreavated by the fact that our leaders — past and present have not done anything good for the country. This despite the phenomenal people’s movement such as that of the People Power revolution that brought GMA to power.

In fact GMA have betrayed the people’s aspirations who installed her to power in Edsa Dos and her admission of rigging the elections, only shows her Trapo character unbeffiting of people’s support.

In fact the Church, have expected a high moral ground and reforms under GMA considering that her term was brough up by a people power similar to that of Cory Aquino. The Church is expecting her to be the opposite of Estrada and who is in a position to lead the country to economic prosperity.

It is clear that the Church is frustrated with GMA and the good Bishop said it very clearly:

“Let us not fall easy prey to those self-seeking politicians from all the different political parties, who have held the country’s future hostage to their own ambitions, and have brought us to where we sadly find ourselves today.”

Kaya nanawagan si Bishop Rosales na this time, in the post GMA scenario, let us not repeat what happened in EDSA DOS, installing another politician like GMA.

While Bishop Rosales is not offering any political alternatives, He suggested some guidance for us to follow. That is precisely is the role of the Church today.

The Church call for prayers should serve as our guide to action.

Pero dahil siguro kakampi ni Gloria ang naglabas they decided to release it according to their schedule.

The country will officially become a BANANA REPUBLIC if we’re going to

Hindi nag-de-destabilize ang opposition. It’s the voices of Gloria and Garci in the tape which destabilizes the nation.

Ilang dyaryo, ilang shopping center, marami sasakyan ng gobierno, ilang mansion KUNG NASA IBANG BANSA LANG MATAGAL NANG SINUNOG NG MGA GALIT NA TAO.
