Mutiny in the Marines

HUNDREDS of Marine troopers escorted by three armored vehicles marched in formation and  gathered in front of the headquarters of their elite unit in Fort Bonifacio shortly before 6 p.m. today to protest the relief of their popular commandant, Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda.

Military authorities announced Miranda’s relief less than three hours ago and said that the general had voluntarily asked to be removed from his post for unknown reasons. But Col. Ariel Querubin, who had earlier admitted planning to join the protests last Friday, said that Miranda had not resigned and remained the Marine chief.

He was joined by Lt. Col. Archie Segumalian, a tall, well-built officer who is the commander of the 2nd Marine Battalion. Segumalian marched toward the office of new Marine chief Brig. Gen. Nelson Allaga, telling journalists in a bellowing voice, "‘Pinakikita lang namin na masama ang loob namin na na-relieve ang commandant namin (We are just showing that we feel bad about the relief of our commandant)."

"Gusto naming malinis na eleksyon," he told journalists, who were airing the event live on cable television. "Para sa Marines lang ito, wala kaming ipinaglalaban (We want clean elections. This is just for  the Marines, we are not fighting for anything else.)" Segumalian was apparently referring to the alleged attempt by the Arroyo camp to rig the elections in Lanao in May 2004, which were supposedly resisted by the Marines. Segumalian was assigned to Lanao del Sur during the polls and it was also during this period that his commander, Brig. Gen. Francisco Gudani was forced to go on leave, allegedly because he was sympathetic to the opposition. (Click here for the PCIJ’s account of the Lanao elections and how men working for the president allgedly tried to get the Marines to cheat for Arroyo.)

Brig. Gen. Allaga, who was barely two hours in his new post, emerged from the headquarters building to meet Segumalian, whom he invited to come to his office. The colonel’s men remained outside the headquarters as this is being written.

Querubin, a Marine batallion commander assigned to Lanao, who had protested Miranda’s relief at about 5 p.m., also met with Allaga. Earlier, he arrived at the headquarters surrounded by rings of civilian supporters, including former Sanlakas party-list representative, JV Bautista. Querubin only said that he and his men were declaring support for Gen. Miranda, and declined to say whether they were remaining loyal to the chain of command.

Here is what Miranda said according to the INQ7.net at:
http://news.inq7.net/breaking/index.php?index=1&story_id=67616

“We are here in a bloodless show of protest and we are calling everybody to protect us,”

Only in da Pilipins.

If you are going to fight a battle, leave civilians out of it and fight like REAL SOLDIERS.

And then this bozo can’t even say for sure if he will or will not remain “loyal to the chain of command”.

Dudes, it’s either you take a crap or get off the can!

You guys were trained to march in your boots, plan MILITARY actions, and use guns. If you are going to make a statement, do it the way you were trained to do so. Otherwise, leave the ol’ Edsa-neering to the usual suspects — nutty politicians, sloganeering activists, and clueless civilians.

The sad part about this is that there is no shortage of gullible civilians to eat up all this stuff — including the tired old drama of publicly-funded congressmen wasting their time grandstanding on Manila’s streets instead of legislating stuff in the comfy offices that hardworking Pinoys provide for them with their hard-earned tax money.

Pinoy nga naman talaga… 😀

To borrow a few phrases from the Declaration of Independence…..

But when a long train of abuses and usurpation, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security

[…] Just two days after the foiled coup d’ etat attempt (or what was so reported), we have more news of unrest, as disgruntled Marines are airing their dismay at the Administration. Members of “civil society” are trooping to the Marine headquarters at Fort Bonifacio in a show of support, even as police and military personnel have been ordered to disallow them, particularly former president Corazon C. Aquino, from entering the premises. […]

I dont understand some comments here..if there’s someone na against sa prinsipyo nyo ur asking them kung Pinoy o hindi.

Hey scud,

I would have had respected and recognized Gloria as president and would have dad supported her even if I didn’t vote for her, if she didnt cheat, if governed well, if she had uplifted the lives of the filipino. But she failed us. She’s the one seting a very bad precendent to all of us, to our children, to our our future leaders that cheating, lying and stealing are ok or acceptable norms in our society..

pingkian,

sad to say but Gloria is not a magician who can uplift the lives of Filipinos in 5 years. I agree with you, she failed us. Neither did i vote for her, but we have to be realistic. We were not born yesterday para maniwalang naging malinis ang eleksyon..matagal na nating alam na bulok ang sistema natin jan, but for me naniniwala pa rin ako ng majority ng mga Filipinos sa buong bansa sya ang hinalal. We just have to accept it and bite the bullet.

The gap between the poor and the rich is so huge today. We all try to do our share to help the country kasi yun ang tungkulin ng bawat Pilipino, but sad to say, mahirap din naman yung tayo na lang ang bubuhat ng pasaning ito, habang ang pamahalaan ay walang pakundangsng winawaldas ang ating mga pinaghirapan. To be able to project a good image abroad, our government must be good first. The government must be transparent to the people they serve.

To say that only through elections would we find a good leader is no assurance either. Remember that an election is also a gamble as we don’t really know the real “persona” of the one’s we elect into office.

The Gap is indeed getting bigger. I mean the gap between the livelihood of an ordinary marine compared to his officer. Until this inequity is addressed, there will alway elements in the military ready to offer his/her services to any dirty politician or any vested interest for a good amount. And same thing is happening to all segments of the Philippine society. The poor is getting poorer and the same oligarch that control the govt. and the business is getting richer. It is no surprise that the same people can stay where they are because the control even the livelihood of most. And instead of trying to elevate the conditions of the people as a whole, they rather want the situation the same, so they can perpetuate their hold for as long as they could. It is true to all the “Trapos”, the big businesses, the Oligarchs, some Elements of Military and to the surprise of no one Even the Left. Politics and its nuances will disappear if these economic inequalities is addressed and given the utmost priority. Just my opinion.

Sa tingin ko dito yung mga masyadong kampi kay gloria, ay alam mo na, it’s either directly or indirectly sila nakikinabang sa gobyerno ni gloria, Like may mga kamag-anak sila na naka-puesto at nagpapayaman, sorry , nakikinabang. I even suspect that some of them are actually Philippine embassy employees, especially those flaunting to be in this or that foreign country. Yun pala pakawala ng illegal CHEAT EXECUTIVE.

Nasasabi ko lang ito, because I know somebody who is a staff in one of the Malacanang Under-Secretary (Kuno), who would re-act violently when-ever we say something against their patron.

Either magwawala, or will call the critics names and what have you.
