NASSA-CBCP: We appeal for sobriety

THE NATIONAL Secretariat for Social Action, Justice & Peace (NASSA) of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) adds its voice to the discussions following President Arroyo’s explanation of why she phoned an election official during the canvassing. NASSA calls on the people to pray, observe sobriety, and have more faith in government, while making an appeal to the president to deliver on her promises. Following is the full text of NASSA’s June 30 statement.

A Call for Sobriety and Non-Violence in the Face of the Present Political Turmoil

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has made public admission of her voice on the taped conversation with a Comelec official, has apologized and has asked forgiveness from the Filipino people for a “lapse of judgment.” “ … let him (her) who to no sin, cast the first stone,” (Jn 8:7)

We admire her courage and humility for owning to a fault, taking full responsibility for it and promising to make up for it by seriously taking on the gargantuan task of implementing needed government reforms to turn around the increasingly burdensome toll on the life of Juan de la Cruz in today’s Philippines.

Our economy is in very bad shape. The peso continues to nosedive and investments are on a standstill. Costs of living, transportation, consumer goods, and energy are on the rise.

Politics in our country is no big deal! Our politicians continue to plunder our moral sensitivities, disregard our higher values of statesmanship, love for country, due process and Constitutional law. They do not cease to abuse our patience and our democratic space.

From media, we are daily barraged by the empty noise of spin-masters/doctors and public relations consultants. There is a widespread epidemic of unsolicited advice and opinion overload, not to mention text messages which run from wholesome jokes to sickening brouhahas.

We appeal for sobriety, for prayer, for moments of reflection and discernment. In this the year dedicated to the Holy Eucharist and Mother Mary, let us take time out to kneel before the Blessed Sacrament and pray the Prayer for the Eucharistic and Marian Year. Let us call on all our Basic Ecclesiastical Communities to organize prayer brigades around the Eucharist and our Blessed Mother in their barangay chapels during these times.

We also appeal for specific actions:

First, we would like the authenticity of the "tapes" to be established beyond doubt. Who did the wiretapping? How, when and where was it done? How authentic are its contents? Only when the authenticity of the tape contents is established can we entertain analysis and judgment on the substance of the conversation that supposedly took place.

Does the substance of the exchange merit any violation or infraction of the law? Only then should due process of the law be invoked and applied to whoever party is found guilty.

Meanwhile, we strongly call for national solidarity and respect for our Constitution and governance system. Let us allow the Executive to govern. Let us trust Congress to play its part in putting in place the needed legislative reforms. And let us give the Judiciary its rightful role in the interpretation of the law.

Specifically, we call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to make good her promise to make amends. Let her institute the much needed and long delayed programs for poverty alleviation, good governance and peacebuilding. Corruption in government and illegal gambling should be finally fiscalized. Microfinance, land reform, increased subsidy, and creation of market opportunities for our small farmers, housing and employment for our urban poor, respect for the rights and ancestral domains of our Indigenous Peoples. Continue to pursue the peace process and negotiations. Challenge the business community to optimize benefits for the poor sectors in the name of corporate social responsibility. Forge critical collaboration with civil society groups to effect meaningful partnership at the service of the poor.

Finally, let us not allow ourselves to be used as instruments of destabilization. Violence breeds more violence. Peace is our only way forward.

For the CBCP Social Action Network,

Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez, DD (signed)

Chair, CBCP Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice and Peace

kainis di ba… magko-quote pa sa sila sa Bible nung “… let him (her) who to no sin, cast the first stone,” (Jn 8:7)”….

anung first stone, first stone ang sinasabi mo jan?!

This must be a joke, hahahah. I can’t believe what I just read. CBCP practically let GMA off the hook by saying: “First, we would like the authenticity of the “tapes” to be established beyond doubt. Who did the wiretapping? How, when and where was it done? How authentic are its contents? Only when the authenticity of the tape contents is established can we entertain analysis and judgment on the substance of the conversation that supposedly took place.”

With CBCP’s argument, the authenticity of the tapes can only be established by producing Doble the original wiretapper. Unfortunately (and we have to thank bishop soc villegas for this, hahaha), Doble is now singing a different tune. He is saying that he was kidnapped by Ong (hahaha) even if Doble was in the seminary before Ong got there and even if Doble had a cellfone all along. (hahahah) Maybe the seminarians or Bishop Bacani kidnapped him. (hahaha).

Based on CBCP’s statement “President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has made public admission of her voice on the taped conversation with a Comelec official”, so why does CBCP need to further authenticate the tape?

I wonder if ERAP or MARCOS were the ones caught talking with a comelec official. hahaha would CBCP have the same slap in the wrist reaction? hahaha…. THIS IS NOT FUNNY ANYMORE!!!!!!!.

haay… with the situation every filipino people are facing right now: hearing/reading the gloria-garci,barbers-garci,and others-garci conversations; the impact of evat which the government has been advertising over and over in almost all tv and cable stations – “mapapagaan ang buhay dahil sa evat” – 3 pesos increase in gasoline, 4 pesos increase in LPG, increase in toll fees, increase in electric bill; jueteng scandal involving none other than the arroyo clan; resurrection of jose pidal issue (too absurd, di pa nadala sa ginawa ni erap)… oh, what more can we ask for… with this kind of scenario, are we ready to just keep silent and pray that things will get better and when we wake up in the morning everything will be alright when in fact nothing has changed… i really am so disappointed and so bothered with what’s happening, i cant even explain objectively to my children what they see/hear from the news because im so upset/frustrated with whats going on…
honestly, we are really in a dilemma… we are being blackmailed: sino ang papalit ke GMA? my question is, wala na ba talagang matino kahit isa? its so frustrating because filipinos in general are really good-hearted people, unfortunately – they are the silent majority… no one from these good-well-principled persons wanted to stand up and dare to lead..
i pray that each of us will try to do our part to make this country a better place to live, however little it may be, but only if everyone will do his/her own thing each day and offer it for the love of this country, somehow, i think, this will make a difference for a better tomorrow.

why do they set one standard for Erap and another standard for GMA or Chavit Singson. Dont they listen to the tape. People were threatened with kidanpping in order to suppress the truth. Thats the problem with our Church they DON’T have ears. ARROGANTE-just like what Susan Roces said. Come to think of it it is said in the Bible the religious people had told Pilate to punish Jesus. That’s why i’m not religious

Claymore and Friends,

We are not resorting to violence (or pandaraya) because we know that it will not do us good.

Katulad ni Bishop Oscar Cruz against jueteng. Sana dumami pa kasama niyo Bishop Cruz.

Mayroon pa tayong pag-asa, si BRO. EDDIE VILLANUEVA.

We should not lose hope for the sake of our family, friends, the poor and weak FILIPINOS. There’s still hope. Let’s give a chance to BRO. EDDIE VILLANUEVA to lead and serve the Philippines. Let’s all PRAY and ACT legally and peacefully.

PAGBABAGO! NGAYON NA!!!

The CBCP are level headed people??????????????? They are just in a period of denial that cheating happened. TO CBCP please stop saying in your homilies about being moral if you yourself can’t make a stand for morality.
Those tapes are the EVIDENCE. Mr.Gangster_roger. You wish to muddle the issue. Look at the US goverment they always have a secure line(Read Tom Clancy’s Novel. The government officials always ask for a secure line). Thats because they EXPECT their calls to be monitored and even recorded. Its just too clumsy GMA wasn’t too careful and It’s God’s way of letting the truth come out. So please don’t give us all your wild theories. You can’t confuse us. The issue is the contents of the tapes. The threats to people’s lives just to cheat in the election. That i can’t accept. I can accept the fraudulent election returns but not kidnapping families and relatives. Its too much to stomach.

Is these a letter from the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines?

Before umamin si Gloria ang issue na authenticy is a very VALID one indeed. Kasi kung hindi aamin si Gloria the tape could be authenticated elsewhere. But the best form of authentication is when the PERSONS INVOLVED IN THE CONVERSATION AFFIRMS that they were indeed the voices behind it.

Ay naku, ewan ko sa mga CBCP na to. Gustong kong magmura!!! Nasaan ba talaga mga utak nito… mukhang mga bayad.

the division among the ranks of the philippine bishops can be traced to the fact that there are certain bishops who benefit from this administration while there are those who remain morally upright. it is common knowledge that some bishops dip their fingers into the jueteng pie and this probably is the reason why they dont want this government removed. thank god we still have upright men of the cloth like archbishop oscar cruz, bishop tobias, bishop labayen and bishop iniguez. how we wish we have more leaders like you so we can be proud to be catholics again. the leadership of the CBCP is pathetic! how can you remain silent when one of your own is pilloried and whose life is seriously under threat because of his decision to expose the evils of jueteng. you’re quite right that there are bishops who benefited from various administrations. but your sense of history is too short. the bishops division reflect divisions in our society. there are those who benefited from marcos and estrada and who felt left out by cardinal sin’s ascension to prominence. and there are those who are truly leftists. if you really studily carefully the manifesto of the six bishops, this country will go down like a banana republic. no foreign investor will not touch us.

But kidnapping people just to sudbue them from speaking up agains cheating during the election is far more worst than wiretapping. Rigging of results i can expect that in an election but threatening families with kidnapping thats too much. MARCOS did it to many human rights activist do we just say its okay to do it today. The NASSA-CBCP in an obvious pro-Gloria leanings express interest to authenticate the ‘Hello Garci’ tapes to find out who wiretapped the President and Garcilano. Isn’t that stupid?

The President already said she was sorry for cheating and here comes her lapdogs insisting to know who spilled the beans on her. Kapal. And these are supposed to be men in cloth.

The had the gall to call people in media as spin-masters issuing empty noises forgetting the fact that the grandmaster of all spin-masters, Iggy Bunye, is the one who started it all.

Sayang.

Our politicians continue to plunder our moral sensitivities, disregard our higher values of statesmanship, love for country, due process and Constitutional law.”

BUHAY TALAGA
Sana di nalang ako dito pinanganak.
