NEARLY nine of 10 household heads support a Senate bill that states the rights and privileges of household helpers, according to the Social Weather Stations.

The research organization’s Aug. 26-Sept. 5 Social Weather Survey estimated the number of household helpers at 584,000 nationwide, of whom 332,000 are stay-in and 252,000 are stay-out.

this is good. the rights of the house helps will be put into law. kawawa din naman talaga ang mga katulong na hindi nabibigyan ng tamang pasweldo at benefits.

Read in the news that the Househelps are having their first national conference in Marikina today.

That is goodnews in the assumption that this marginalized sector are now aware of their rights under the Labor Code as well as in the Civil Code and not to mention their “new” rights if the proposed measure improving their lot will be granted by Congress soonest.

Caveat, however, that with the “new” rights comes greater responsibility and, of course, the expected “profesionalized” kind of service coming from the kasambahay themselves.
