New U.P. law dean denies blog report

I wasn’t able to catch the start of the Senate hearing but was the UP panel asked if it was barred from attending this morning’s investigation?

I’m not so sure about that either, I suppose they were because Sen. Biazon reiterated this to the lone gov’t representative who attended the hearing. Atty. Gonzales later said that his office was being padlocked and the documents were taken away. I guess this only means that he has no job to return to.

That’s the government for you.. Instead of confronting the problem they always find a away to avoid it… A wise man once said that he who does not know..or for this matter chooses not to know what the problems are wont be able to find the solutions for said problems.. or for this matter dose’nt want the problem to be solved because it will mean less kurakot for them.. The tactics of the goverment are as follows
1. diverting attention to other matters ex. paquiao win, mss international win
2. parading the economic threat, communist threat, terrorist threat, opposition destabilization scenario. (if they are confident with their hold in the military why be scared of a bunch of rallyist who are not even violent)
3. now preventing officials to testify in the senate.. for god only know how many mali-mali bunye gonzalez like officials we have in government right now.
4. discrediting any individual who decides to testify against the government.. those who they cannot coerce nor bribe to tow the line they smash the credibility.
5. bribe officials not to mention the mayors the governors and congressmen to be yes men and women.. to be at the becking call of the president.. “umutot lang ang pangulo lahat sila papalakpak na di lang alam ni ms arroyo na me hidden agenda and ramos de venecia tandem”
Ganyan ang government natin… Uubusin ang pera ng bayan para lang di matanggal sa pwesto.. Pakapalan ng ng apog!!
Anung sabi ni de venecia?? ayaw natin ng presidential system dahil its a flawed system… well an american president once said ask not what your country can do for.. but what you can do for your country.. Have you asked that of yourself sir.. or for that matter anyone in government??

One of the “UP Legal Luminaries” mentioned in the PCIJ report denies having received any instructions from Dean Carlota prohibiting him from appearing in the Senate inquiry.

If the source of the “reliable information” is really reliable, would it not be more reliable to call up those allegedly prohibited from appearing? A little verification never hurts a good journalist.

At least they are quicker and more willing to correct any errors, unlike the local mainstream or legacy media.

I agree with the sentiments of fencesitter, but it is remarkable that the blog elicited a response from the public official in question. (But then of course,this IS PCIJ!) The fact that you have promptly published the riposte saves the situation by fulfilling an important journalistic tenet: to always publicize the truth insofar as it can be known.

Moreover, this also means that such official can continue to be discussed and his actions analyzed by the blog’s participants to test the veracity of his apparent claim of innocence that the Palace will control the UP Law School through him. Dean Carlota should expect continuing attention from largely anonymous, but obviously perspicuous and vigilant minds.

By the way, the faculty of the UP College of Law bear an especial responsibility to uphold the fundamental intellectual integrity of the Law. Maybe in places like the Trapo Congress a certain looseness with logic and reason and ethics is allowed by the Rule of the Majority. But, it would be a sickening tragedy if the UP Law School were to fall under the reign of the moral and mental dwarves under which we now exist.

I mean to say, it would be tragic if the Law School descended to the level of mere lawyering for either side instead of the GRAND manner of its visionary foundations, not only to teach the Law, but to make it stick.

We can only hope in men and women of intellectual integrity, such as Dean Carlota claims to be, to help restore our faith in the Law. He can do so by explaining the complex legal issues of the present crisis convincingly–in a way that does not create revulsion in us for the Rule of Law.

We need such men of integrity AND reason who can provide the substantive arguments to REBUT the deep, clever lies of the long nosed liars like Raul Gonzales, Ignacio Bunye, Eduardo Ermita, Rigoberto Tiglao, Ricardo Saludo .

I look to institutions like the UP College of Law to restore our faith in reason itself when our highest leaders are plainly using the Letter of the Law to subvert the very Spirit of the Law.

UP until now, I have had every reason to applaud and admire the UP College of Law, its former (sic!) Dean Raul Pangalangan, and all of his colleagues who have figured in the various issues, or are about to! Indeed they have been, in my humble opinion, like the PCIJ is to journalism, a moral counterpart in the academic law profession.

May it always be, or damned be any Pretender.

Belinda Cunanan’s husband -retired Gen Cunanan is one of the Directors of a Government-owned corporation. ( PNOC?)

let’s not forget that she got a FREE RIDE in a chartered flight to rome as well as VIP PRIVILEGES in POPE JOHH PAUL 2’s FUNERAL. for an opus dei member, that’s like heaven. she was probably the star of many a get-together here to gush about her experience there. she’s highly likely the only opus dei member based in the philippines who was able to go to the funeral. sikat siya and for free … with husband pa yun ha.

thelmo cunanan was ambassador to cambodia, PNOC exec and SSS chairman (or president). mahina ang 100K per month na compenastion dyan. di nawawalan ng trabaho courtesy of the government. not bad for a retired general who probably has no combat experience.

i’ve never seriously read bel cunanan’s column. ever since ang tingin ko dyan ay name dropper. parang social climber. walang substance. pareho ng anak niyang si christine, na buti na lang di na bumalik from japan.

Sino ba namang matino ang seseryosohin ang sinisulat nyang si Belinda Cunanan? Sobrang babaw at parang abno ang points of view. Halatang-halata na sweldohan ni GMA yan. E sino ba naman ang matinong writer ang papayag na mabayaran? Yun lang naman walang pag-asang itaas ang sarili sa sariling kakayahan ang magbebenta ng sarili para magkaroon ng konting saysay ang buhay. I hear her article with the same attitude a read the comics page. Her denseness is entertaining, at least.

UP Law professors, please don’t sell yourselves like the Cunanans.

My heart felt for Dean Pangalangan when I read his column today. Its disappointing and depressing to see the manipulative hands of politics in our premiere educational institutions. Godspeed Dean!

Hay naku. When he was on the list of nominees for appointment as SC justice, he had nothing bad to say about GMA. Always tried to kiss her ass. But when he got bypassed twice, he suddenly developed a “stand” against GMA’s habit of delving into the illegal and dishonest.

In as much as I feel sorry for him that he was booted out rather unceremoniously, he has served for 2 terms as UP Law Dean. His deanship has created huge opportunities for the College and has introduced novel areas of law into the curriculum. However, it has also been tarnished by his random “political clashes” and “irreconcileable differences” with some of the faculty, which has caused some of Malcolm’s best professors to leave.

He supported EDSA Dos wholeheartedly and found nothing wrong with the Supreme Court decision that ruled newspaper clippings of an alleged diary of X about the state of mind of Y is admissible as evidence and can be accepted as proof of Y’s state of mind.

Frankly, he lacks credibility and unfortuantely, he commands little respect from the students, Alumni and faculty of the College.

PCIJ’s source doesn’t seem so credible. He’s been a source of embarassment for the PCIJ rather than anything else. He or she sounds like a rumour monger.
