Luz goes on leave

DEPARTMENT of Education Undersecretary Juan Miguel Luz has taken a two-month leave from office while his case is being heard before the Civil Service Commission.

On October 14, 2005, Luz filed a case against Malacañang for ordering his transfer to the Department of Labor and Employment, in what his lawyers said was a politically motivated move. Luz got in hot water with the Palace for refusing the postdated checks it issued for Zambales Rep. Antonio Diaz’s scholarship program at the height of the impeachment scandal.

Luz said a reassignment is basically like a termination and in his affidavit raised the issue that the Labor department did not have a position available for him.

I appreciate PCIJ for consistently doing follow up reports on Usec Luz’s case. This is where most mainstream media fails as they tend only to report on whats hot but miss to follow through on developments and conclusions. Thanks PCIJ!

Malacanang has grossly erred in persecuting the one man that has given the DepEd a good public image in years. The case of Usec Luz is definitely political in nature and only shows that Malacanang’s favor only goes to its political supporters. We have worked with a lot of personnel at the DepEd and this guy is surely one of the very few in that Department who has integrity. Luz should stay at the DepEd if only to make sure there are still uncorruptible people left in that agency.

If Usec Luz, erred in not honoring the checks that Malacanang issued to one of their cronies then Malacanang should prove their point and sack Luz if he did erred. If Malacanang erred in trying to launder money through a person, whom they did not consult first, then they should just let him be. Their message is clear, goverment is no place for an honest person. You have to be like GMA to be in this government.
