Sex in the kingdom: The podcast

SINCE the 1970s, Saudi Arabia has been hiring fun-loving Filipinos by the hundreds of thousands. There, they find themselves in a place so alien, in a culture so strange and so unwelcoming of foreigners.

Filipinos in Saudi Arabia experience acute loneliness and homesickness. They fight off their desolation by seeking human contact. But in conservative Saudi Arabia, that is not so easy. Still, many Filipinos manage to skirt the taboos, including having intimate relations with women outside of marriage. Sometimes, men have sex with men.

Journalist Jose Torres Jr. lived in Saudi for three years. In this podcast, he tells us about the intimate lives of Filipinos in the Kingdom.
