SWS: Pinoys look forward to better life

MORE Filipinos are looking at the brighter side of things, or so it seems.

In its December 2005 survey, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) found that 30 percent of Filipinos are optimistic that their quality of life would be better after 12 months. Meanwhile, 23 percent of the respondents expect life to be worse. This resulted in a net personal optimism score of +6.

SWS said this is a "bare improvement" from the August 2005 survey, where 26 percent were optimistic and 27 percent were pessimistic, or a zero net optimism score.

However, when respondents were asked to compare their present quality of life to 12 months ago, four out of ten said it had worsened. Only 19 percent said it had gotten better.

As for their economic outlook for this year, 16 percent of the respondents said they were optimistic while 47 percent said they were pessimistic.

"It is normal to be more optimistic about one’s own quality of life than about the economy as a whole," SWS explained.

The SWS Fourth Quarter survey was conducted from November 27 to December 4, 2005.
