POLICE raided the office of The Daily Tribune at about 12:30 a.m. today, and confiscated copies of the newspaper’s Saturday issue.

This came after the President placed the country under a state of emergency. Yesterday, the President warned the media against publishing rumors and baseless information. Administration officials also hinted of a possible takeover of public utilities including media organizations.

There were reportedly around 15 members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group that entered the Tribune office at T.M. Kalaw Street. In an interview with the ABS-CBN, Niñez Cacho-Olivares, the newspaper’s publisher, said the police showed no papers when they raided the office.

"What’s this, martial law? Does the state of national emergency allow the policemen of Gloria to just confiscate anything they please?" Olivares said.

The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) had earlier issued a statement, hours after the proclamation, condemning threats against the media.

"Twenty-years ago, the people threw out a dictatorship. We should not allow — nay, we should resist — a return to those dark days of repression. We are not destabilizers or coup plotters. Our duty in the media is to report as truthfully as we could, guided by our best lights," the PPI said.

Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law and the following resulted:

*imprisoned intelligent and respectable Senators, et al…
*confiscated his enemies’ assets
*stole the national treasury which to this day are unaccounted for
*absolutely shut the press

Gloria, please declare Martial Law to cleanse the country. It took a dictatorship to ruin the Philippines, it will take a dictatorship to fix it.

Pwede rin! Come to think of it, sino ba ang takot na takot dyan sa State of Emergency.

You may be right.

Notice how the middle class, a key component of EDSA 1’s success seems to be silent about the whole thing. Almost welcoming.

The opposition not only is dis-organized and selfish, but they are also tainted by the still present radical left. GMA after 20 years is finally addressing what Cory didn’t in 86. Eliminate the reds and their obsolete ideologies starting with Beltran and Ocampo. Industrial Age born Marxism is so 20th century. Nasa Knowledge Economy na tayo mga ‘pre!

Maybe when the smoke clears, we will finally have a legitimate and competent opposition instead of a fake alliance of Marcos Loyalists, Communists, senile old fogies, and political grandstanders.

so what’s wrong with the reds? if i recall they were the ones who continued the struggle against the dictatorship after the senate got paralyzed from the initial shock. it was satur, sison, rosales and countless other activists that got brutalized by the marcos regime because they stood up and fought everything that the marcos repression stood for.

this is my personal take on EDSA celebration:
PEOPLE POWER was borne out of the efforts of the people who have dreamt of having a society conducive to peace and progress for its people. The people were not wrong at that time…it is just right to overthrow a dictator.
It is the GOVERNMENT LEADERS and OLIGARCHIC families who betrayed the Filipinos and taken them for a ride. Instead of executing and fully implementing policies to uplift the plight of the majority, they embraced hook, line and sinker the greedy, sinister and corrupt ways of the old traditional politicians and old elites.
GMA was the greatest and biggest disappointment and disillusinment that we, the freedom-loving and reform-minded Filipinos, had trusted the country, along with its 85 million people, with. With her pedigree, educational background and the manner by which she was catapulted into office, she could have made a big difference and tremendous moral impact in our political and social climate. but she chose to thread the path of the old ways—even having the temerity to justify her sin and omission by saying that, well…anyway everybody is corrupt and she is just a player in the system….etc.
under is an outline of scandals and issues rocking her office upon assuming the presidency:
1) IMPSA deal – Jimenez, Perez, et. al
2) Vicky Toh caper – Defensor a big character in the melo-drama using gov’t resources – Mahusay, et. al
3) Prosecution of Erap did not prosper – she has no moral suasion to pursue because she’s also guilty of the same crimes
4) Acsa Ramirez blunder- instead of recognizing Acsa for her honesty, she was convicted and humiliated by publicity by no less than the president. (maybe…this is a veiled threat for those who will do the same thing because of larger sums of money that will eventually disappear in gov’t coffers come election time)
5) Majority of government appointees came from the military–why? is she trying to consolidate an absolute hold on power and for what reason? we may be realizing now that she have a need for them after all
6) Bolante caper, re-stolen marcos wealth…etc, etc.billions of funds missing or unliquidated
7) Bankrupt gov’t institution –why the importance of E-VAT?
8) Family connection in big time smuggling and jueteng largesse surpassing the alleged estrada takes
but maybe…the biggest disappointment are the character, and profiles of personalities we elect in office ( maybe…cheated their way into one). who perpetually mouthed inanities, illogical reasoning, immature bickerings and immoral partisan lines because they materially, financially benefit from them. intelligent individuals who would rather take the moronic stance for personal enrichment and power posturings

Got two interpretations on this:

A prelude to martial law…

GMA is taunting the opposition, especially the left to stand up and show her what they’ve got… Afterwards, a justification will be made to impose martial law in the name of “social order…” Abangan ang iba pang pang-aabuso ng gobyerno sa ilalim ng “state of national emergency…”

A prelude to cha-cha…

With the evident excess the President is showing, she might be hinting the need for charter-change… And so if lawmakers claim there is a need to change provisions in the charter, madali na nilang maipapasok ang pagpapalit ng system of government to a parliamentary form… Beside, with what is happening, i personally is convinved we need to specifically state what are the powers and circumstances allowed for a President to exercise within the context of a national emergency… Also, we need to put a check and balance in this proclamation by putting the Congress’ imprimatur (a 1/2 vote both from the Senate and Lower House perhaps?) for the declaration of such a situation…

Being warned is being forearmed…

I am saddened to read here that there are so many who do not see the dangerous implications of this threat to press freedom.

I don’t agree most of the time with the Tribune’s take on the news. But I would defend their right to say what they want to say because that is the essence of a democracy, and because in doing so I also preserve my own rights and freedoms.

If I keep quiet now, while they are trying to muzzle the Tribune, who is to say that–in the future–I will be able to speak freely? There are things in every administration that have to be brought to light. The only way you can do this is through a free and vibrant press.

If the Tribune slandered anybody, the offended can always sue them in court. There is another punishment–readers can choose not to buy or read them. (Because of the way they treat stories, I generally don’t buy the Tribune.)

It is the market–the readers–that should be the final arbiter of what is credible or not, not some big brother (or little sister) in Malacañang.

After 20 years, it’s deja vu all over again. It is as if Marcos had reincarnated through the present occupant of Malacanan palace. The the bogus president and the commander in cheat of the country is another tyrant in the making.

i wouldn’t be surprised if pcij will be next. saan pa ba papunta to? warrantless arrest (a 21 year old sedition case?) , raiding of media offices, banning of edsa 1 commemoration (killing the edsa spirit), etc.

still i can’t imagine that some smart guys here are even rejoicing for the declaration of the state of national emergency and even prodding for martila law! really took the wit out of me.

so, did the economy benefit from this overkill (as fvr said)? did glue-ria take that into consideration as she keeps on saying about the economy, stupid? truth is, hanging on to power is all that matters to her.

when the smoke clears, will there be somebody standing on the way? what remains will be as pen said, ate glue, tabako, deVenecia, chavit, all you tongressmen, mayors, governors and cum jueteng lords out there. unless they all commit mass suicide as what pen proposes. then we will have a legitimate and competent govt. and oposition.

but i like what she’s doing. i would like her to panic even more and declares martial law. arrest more people, close down media institutions and suspend the writ of habeas corpus. the international communities specially the media are watching closely. if she does that, soon foreign investors will pull-out. the economy will crash down. and soon also other govt. will start withdrawing their supports for her and call their nationals to stay away from the phils. that will be the start of her downfall. then her allies (the balimbings) upon sensing it will start making an about face. makikita mo na rin sila kunwari denouncing glue-ria and the evils that she does. calling for her ouster. and it will not take long before she crashes down hard…ang ganda di ba?

dirty tricks department operators got several problems;

first, they want to strike swiftly and without let-up on perceived enemies.
problem: they are so numerous and they cut across economic and ideological boundaries. kaya, it is the usual morning fare that ends promptly in jail: peoples orgs. personalities like beltran, et. al ( ho..hum, dont you guys have a more healthier imagination than that? you offered us nothing new in terms of excuse and choice of suspects)

well, okay you chose to cross swords with ms ninez cacho-olivares and her types… do you intend to sustain it? because if you cannot, and i believe you cannot, society matrons will make fun of you and ms ninez make a mincemeat out of your misguided loyalties. if only any of you, tried to check her history, you will realize that she actually made it a passion to throw punches whoever sits in malacanan-be it marcos, cory, fvr, or estrada. now, the present occupant is no better than its predecessors yet, you expect something sweet from her?

second, there is a fizzure. authoritarian success stories lies primarily on the unqualified support of the military and the business people. the former is doubtful and the latter is definitely not so ga-ga on GMA. it depends on how your boss ration the carrot amongst them. of course, your apologists will point out the support of Fed. of Fil-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and Phil. Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( not a surprise, they did the same when Marcos declared martial law ).
but the independent businesses is now assembled in their respective war rooms. you think it is that easy?

third, some local government officials who shamelessly defended GMA last July finally (although at turtle’s pace) have collected their wits and defies GMA order to cancel rally permits. case in point, is davao city. the mayor in fact, issued special permits to interested groups to demo to their hearts content until may 30. similar move is expected from governor of samar.

fourth, the OFWs because of their sheer number and devotion to their chosen profession- they are more effective as ambassadors of their country than the pitiful Foreign Affairs Sec. Romulo- meekly defending a president gone mad, you have just draw the whole wide world watching your irresponsible political experiment.

finally, got PCIJ on the watchlist they say? he he… that will put mike defensor on a bind. let us see how fascist he could become and jail his peers at u.p. attention mike d., history is still on the making and unfolding, you still have the time to catch bus and make it home.

Don’t panic folks. No way can GMA declare martial law. The proclamation of a state of emergency is the closest she can get to declaring it. Even that carries no special powers. It’s more of a statement that carries a message to coup plotters and destabilizers that what’s happening on the ground will not be tolerated. So stay cool, but be vigilant. Arrests have been made based on suspected seditious activities which could have been done without proclaiming a state of emergency. And if you’ll ask the DOJ Secretary why arrests are done without warrant the brainy one will tell you he’s conducting a citizen’s arrest, and since the charge is probably rebellion which is a “continuing crime”, the suspect can be arrested even in his sleep. Smart fellow da man is.

I am totally in support of Freedom of Speech, but if such freedom is used as tool detrimental to the securtiy of the states and the security of person, then the limit should be imposed by lawfull means. And who to judge what the lawfull means are? Under the law of the land. It maybe an overkill, or underkill, we don’t know yet. The Proclamation is a defensive move, a pre-emptive (ala George Bush), but if the danger is clear to the President, according to her judgement, then as a President (still) she has the power to Proclaim 1017. Let us wait and little while and see if she really into cleaning up the mess or just trying to get out of her own mess. I’m not privy to the intellegence and evidence the Pres. have in proclaming the State of Emergency, so I’ll keep the attitude of wait and see.

There are many ways how to practice bloodless people power (and you do not even have to go to EDSA) to bring down the government of GMA and not be identified with any factions be it left or extreme right.

SUPREME SACRIFICE:

Since GMA will not make any sacrifice (even in her dreams or nightmare), Filipino people should do the supreme sacrifice themselves by forcing all international businessman to widthdraw their investment in the Philippines (I said all and that includes Chinese, Taiwanese, Americans, etc.)

How to do it is as simple as abc;

a. Forced foreign owned corporations to close down their factory and withdraw their investments by not reporting to work or by disturbing or affecting their operations.

b. Ask your relative working overseas not to send the money to the bank owned by the government or banks with close association with the government to drain our foreign reserves and bring to halt the operation of the present govenment.

c. Do not keep your money in the banks (specially government owned) to forced them to bankruptcy.

d. Buy only the food that is necessary and keep tighten your belt because you are doing an extreme sacrifice in behalf of GMA.

e. Do not buy products from the cronies or companies associated with the government such as San Miguel Corporation of Danding, Pyramid Business of Mike Depindot’s wife nd his new business, and others.

f. Pray hard that one day GMA will be paralize, stroke or have a heart attack, accidentally shot by her bodyguard, push by Mike Arrovo in the 5th floor, die on her sleep and other brutal way of death that she only to blame for.

g. Do not pay even a cent to your taxes to force the police and military into hunger for there is no more money in the government due to widthdrawal of investors, bankruptcy of the banks etc.

h. Lobby or even rally to foreign governments not to support or lend anymore money to GMA government to forced her police and military to breakdown.

i. All government employees should not report to work and let GMA and police and military to stare at themselves the whole day everyday until they develop serious cataract in their eyes.

j. Start planting camote in your backyard, do not listen or watch televisions, use phone and mobilephone, do not use electricity or ever pay your bills to forced these companies into bankruptcy.

k. If the police will arrest you for not paying your bills, do not resist them and instead ask them to bring also your wife, kids, mother and father so that they will feed all inside the jail.

l. Important thing is do not lost hope with what you do because in doing extreme sacrifice will make you more stronger spiritually, morally and emotionally.

m. Those OFWs or pinoys living abroad, write to your host government, participate in Blogs and Online Forums and condems GMA government so that she will exposed even in the remotest place on earth.

This is a bloodless way of bringing down the illigitimate GMA government peacefully without going to EDSA.

I will assure you in 1 to 2 months time, GMA will go down in shame and if she is still standing tall, then expect our country to be at par with military ruled Myanmar in terms of human right violations, killings, hunger and living under chain of poverty which I think our supreme sacrifice are not enough and noticed by our Creator.

Very well said Tsinoy, kung bawal ang rallies, “CIVIL DISOBIDIENCE” is the way to go. I have not given up on the Philippines, that is the reason why I’ve stayed. I can easily take my family abroad and could care less for whatever happens to our country. But looking back at those who sacrificed their lives so that this politicians enjoy the right to be elected. Sabi nga ni NINOY, “the Filipino is worth dying for”. I too fought hard to give my children the democracy they now enjoy.

Some colleagues of mine were never seen again and some were found tortured to death. I will never forget those dark years of Matial Rule. Baka ‘di niyo naiiintindihan ang pinagsasabi ninyo.

Pray hard and wish that you do not experience this abuses, baka ‘pag kayo ang nakatikim ay magsisi kayo. But then again, I guess you deserve it for being to blind to see the bigger picture.

Power is addictive and very corruptive. Yan lang ang rason ni GMA and her minions behind this Proclamation.

I call on all Filipinos who love and cherish democracy to stand up and protect this democracy we enjoy. Let’s not put to waste the efforts of those who gave up their lives so our children may enjoy the freedom they so deserve.

The silent majority is watching, if this government pushes the wrong button, baka magulat sila sa kayang gawin ng taungbayan.

after declaring a state of national emergency to defend daw the people against evil forces, sunod na araw nag mall-tour. photo ops (as what fvr said glue-ria is fond of). yan ba ang under threat? extreme danger? nagawan niya rin ng paraan na hindi siya makapunta sa edsa celebration and face cory and co.. ipagbawal ba naman ang edsa celebration. i stand corrected madame, magagaling mga advisers mo.

tsinoy, maganda yung mga suggestions mo for the supreme sacrifice of the people. pero sana magkaroon na lang ng divine intervention at yung letter (f) na lang sa list mo ang mangyari. short cut ba para masaya lahat.

I’m hoping to find more brilliant and less hair-brained ideas here. Please lang…for the country’s sake.

Let’s cut back on the drama here. We’re in the 21st century with new media, the internet, and SMS. No one can truly quell journalistc freedom in this day and age. Get real. The sky is not falling.
