Peeping Toms go hi-tech

THE last in our i Report October series on voyeurs and exhibitionists takes a look at how technology has unwittingly enhanced the activities of voyeurs in the Philippines and taken their “game” into an entirely new level.

A series of voyeuristic snapshotsThese days, celebrities are not the only ones starring in amateur skinflicks that are being circulated through cell phones and in cyberspace. So are ordinary folk — many of whom are students — who may or may not have consented having their most intimate moments recorded. Certainly, though, few of them expected to be on display so publicly.

It’s a trend that has not gone unnoticed among authorities. Palmer Mallari, executive officer at the Anti-Fraud and Computer Crimes Division of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), even suspects that cell phones are the most common tools of the trade of the culprits who are responsible for the proliferation of amateur sex clips on the Internet.

But cases of cybervoyeurism have proved to be hard to solve, largely because the victims are reluctant to come forward.

Voyeurism, or sexual stimulation through visual means, existed since the olden days.

When I was growing up during the 70’s voyeurism was the thing for high school buddies at their puberty stages. However, limited to “bedtime stories”, films called; “fighting fish”; live shows called; “toro”; sleazy clubs in caloocan, bocaue bulacan or calumpang in marikina! IN those days said places were ‘notorious’ for such.

Conversely, easy access to computers these days is more perilous than before. Kids as early as age 9 and above are more adept to its use. And most likelihood, surfing the net could lead them to the same site as what has been reported above on voyeurism.

Indeed, it’s bothering for parents who’ve grown in the 70’s like me. Because we wouldn’t know if our children of both sexes, would either be a victim or a voyeur!

[…] The recent news on the “BIR Sex Scandal” reminds me of the PCIJ report on Peeping Toms going hi-tech (Inside PCIJ and i Report). According to the PCIJ: These days, celebrities are not the only ones starring in amateur skinflicks that are being circulated through cell phones and in cyberspace. So are ordinary folk — many of whom are students — who may or may not have consented having their most intimate moments recorded. Certainly, though, few of them expected to be on display so publicly.
