Filipinos expect a happy X’mas — SWS

IT might just be a merry Christmas after all.

In its latest survey, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) reported that three out of five Filipinos expect a happy Christmas this year.

Mindanao appear to be the most optimistic (70 percent), followed by the rest of Luzon (65 percent), the Visayas (60 percent), and Metro Manila (45 percent). Over the years, since 2002, Mindanao has consistently posted the highest scores.

Among the classes, majority (69 percent) of those in the ABC bracket expect a happy Christmas. Majority of those from the D and E classes also have the same expectations; only 10 percent from the E class say they expect Christmas to be sad.

And even among those who said they experienced “severe hunger” or those who were often or always hungry, majority (54 percent) say they expect a happy Christmas. Also, the expectation of a happy Christmas is 63 percent among those who have not experienced hunger.

The SWS reported however that the proportion of those anticipating a happy Christmas has been declining across all demographic groups since 2002.

The fourth quarter survey found that happiness with Christmas in Metro Manila went down by 10 points this year from 55 percent in 2005; in 2002, it was 77 percent.

Those expecting a happy Christmas in the Visayas also went down from 66 percent in 2005. SWS said Visayas got the lowest recorded score this year, compared to previous scores since 2002.

And while the scores in the rest of Luzon went up by seven points this year, the happiness scores have been declining from 78 percent in 2002 to 62 percent in 2004 and then 58 percent in 2005. The same trend was seen in Mindanao, except that scores increased by two points this year.

Meanwhile, 75 percent of Filipinos say it is better to give than receive Christmas gifts.

SWS said the proportion who say it is better to be give is highest in Metro Manila (86 percent) and among the higher socio-economic classes.

Many Filipinos this year are likewise thankful for “good health” and for “being alive.” According to SWS, these were also the most popular responses in the November 2003 survey.

Pambihira naman Avigail, akala ko palalayasin na si Pandak bago mag-Pasko. Ganda na sana ng header. Heheh.

Anyways, there are still enough reasons to have a happy Xmas this year.

The Top Ten Reasons Why We Still Expect a Happy Xmas This Year:

10. We have not been arrested, tortured, salvaged, or ambushed by the wicked armed forces;
9. We still have a few nurses and doctors left to treat us when we get hit by stray bullets fired in the Xmas and New Year’s revelry – (wait til they polish their English);
8. We won’t experience price increases in gasoline, diesel, water, UP tuition, LPG, and electricity this Xmas – they all happen next year;
7. We won’t be burdened by the expensive hamon, queso de bola, grapes, and apples this year – we’re not buying any;
6. We’ve made this year’s Xmas bonus last one day more than last year’s – by ignoring all ATMs for 24 hrs;
5. We’ve avoided the expensive Malls and survived the Xmas shopping in Divisoria and Baclaran without any untoward incidents – except for a stiff neck from walking sideways for hours;
4. We’ve never been safer during driving – no accidents happen when your average speed is one KPH;
3. We’ve saved ourselves the trouble of campaigning against a new constitution while handing over our gifts to our inaanaks – (I spoke too soon?);
2. We won’t be hearing from the Queen’s lapdogs and bootlickers until the end of the year;

And the No 1 reason why we still expect a happy Xmas this year:

We Filipinos are a stupid, fencesitting, and apathetic bunch of cowards! Throw out the Midget before Monday and we’ll all have a blast!

Merry Chacha-less Xmas and Happy Gloria-less New Year’s to Shiela, Alecks, Avigail, Cecile, Vinia and to all bloggers who have made PCIJ worth the bandwidth in 2006.
