The nation woke up to somber news this morning with the passing of former President Corazon Aquino at 76. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in early 2008 and had been confined at the Makati Medical Center.

Her son Sen. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III confirmed that no state funeral will be held for the former president, because she was a private person at the time of her death. The wake will be held at La Salle Greenhills. Her remains will be buried alongside her late husband, former Sen. Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr., at the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque. Interment is scheduled on Wednesday morning, August 6.

In 2006, on the 20th anniversary of the People Power revolution, Mrs. Aquino sat down with the PCIJ’s Sheila Coronel, where she discussed, among other things, her legacy. “I don’t know how they will judge [my presidency],” Aquino said, “but I just hope that they will realize that it was not an easy thing restoring democracy after a dictatorship. Also being the first woman president certainly had its problems and then we were dealing with a very strong military that were spoiled during the Marcos dictatorship.”
