Asean media and cause-oriented groups are opposing moves by the Cambodian government to impose stricter regulations on the activities of foreign and local non-government organzations working inside the country.

The Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) and the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) released a joint statement expressing concern over the bill now pending before the Cambodian parliament called “Law on Associations and Non-Governmental Organizations.” The PCIJ is a founding member of SEAPA.

The groups said the bill in its present form gives the government “excessive power” to regulate and intervene in the activities of all NGOs in the country.
