The Alberto Martinez story

Another installment of the PCIJ Media Killings Documentaries, the story of Alberto Martinez revolves around a Kabacan, North Cotabato radioman’s attempts to secure justice after he was shot and crippled by gunmen in 2005.

Martinez is one of the few journalists to survive a slay attempt. Public and private prosecutors say his case is remarkable in that very seldom are victims or witnesses able to positively identify their assailants. On the other hand, the case of Martinez has dragged on in court. The case is complicated by the fact that one of the alleged assailants is an army special forces soldier who claims that his entire battalion is willing to testify that he was on a combat operation in faraway Sulu province when the shooting occurred.
