THE National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) is calling on fellow journalists for a media gathering tomorrow, February 26, 11 a.m., at the Newsdesk Café located at Sct. Madrinan corner Sct. Tobias Streets in Quezon City.

Below is the invitation from Jose Torres, chairperson of NUJP’s Committee for the Protection of Journalists:

Recent developments, including the Friday night raid of the Daily Tribune newspaper office, the deployment of troops to "watch" over broadcast stations ABS-CBN and GMA-7, and the threat implied against news organizations in the February 24 proclamation declaring a state of national emergency, all indicate that the Arroyo government is seeking to intimidate print and broadcast facilities and journalists, and scare them from covering and exposing all the angles of the present crisis.

The question is: will we be cowed?

We would like to invite you to join us at a gathering of media groups and individuals who want to take a strong and united stand against any attempt to muzzle media all over again.

For inquiries, you may call the following:

  • Joe Torres (0919 5669116)
  • Weng Paraan (0910 4950095)
  • NUJP office (4117768)

A word of advice to Arroyo. I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that this State of Emergency will help the Philippines economically. However, some of your moves might actually irritate the people to a point of fighting back. The best way to convince the country that you mean business is to arrest and execute those who should have been back in 1986. I guarantee that you will be supported locally and internationally if you were to go after Imelda and the rest of her ‘basura’ family and their cronies. Go after Danding, Benedicto, Ver, Enrile, Honasan…..Estrada, Jinggoy, Susan…wipe them out. You do this, the people will say, “Finally, some results!”

If you don’t, you may see the end of your regime this year. The people are longing for decisive actions and resolutions the past 20 years have yet to provide. DO IT!!!!! All I want is to see Imelda guillotined.

ryebosco, you have a point there but your Marcos cronies list is very incomplete. You forgot De Venecia, Lucio Tan, Villafuerte, Pichay, Chavit, Durano, Golez, Drilon, and so many others.

GLUE-RIA had all the chances to make a change; to make a difference; to lead us to her so-called, “Strong Republic.” What did she do with her chance? She blew it. She came up with her CPR, her EO 464, and most recently, her EO 1017. And so here we are in her ROTTEN REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!

You don’t give idiots the benefit of the doubt.

yes chabeli..Gloria has all the chances to make changes, but i think she’s never worthy for you.

What a joke!

Sorry po, di to joke. Ito’y katutuhanan. Tingnan nyo nga naman, lahat na lang ng sakuna at pangyayari sa Pinas ( nagka-stampede, nag-mudslide, etc. etc.) the president is always put to blame. Shows how pessimistic, fault finder and big carpers ang karamihan sa atin, special mention dito yang ‘KARAMIHAN’ dyan sa Maynila.

Filipinos also want freedom from media’s excess! Freedom from the peddling of assumptions as the ULTIMATE TRUTH in every articles published or broadcast. Freedom from sensationalism.

dakdak,

How can you expect anyone who is against Mrs. Arroyo to support an illegitimate president? I’m not foolish enough to do that. God gave me the wisdom to discern between right and wrong. I know that lying, cheating, and thieving is a sin. Maybe to you that’s acceptable, but not to me.

You are correct to point that out, bernardocarpio. That’s how lamentable the fate of news is. As Sheila Coronel wrote a few weeks ago on the “Wowowee” tragedy, that’s been how predictable the news cycle is. And it’s not only news about disasters.

After about a week or 10 days, the story will likely slide out of top of the newscast and the front pages. The media will move on to the next headline-grabber and the tragedy will be recalled maybe a year after, on its first anniversary, or will merit a one-liner the next time a similar event occurs.

It is something that the media, especially those in the mainstream, should seriously think about if the soul-searching that the Wowowee and the Southern Leyte tragedies have provided everyone in the media is to translate into truly meaningful changes.

I also believe if about time to Reform the State of the Media in all forms. It is healthy to have all different publications, whether left, right or centre, but I always believe that within such news organization, their columnist or opinion writers should be available to all sides within the org.. And the libel and slander laws should be tranform into civil laws, so its is easier for any party to pursue legal remedies in such cases. And I’m not sure if you have a permanent Ombusman within your news organization? ? We do. To keep an eye to its own people if they become irresponsible. Freedom of Speech and Expression can be fully Enjoyed and Exercised if everyone knows its limitation. This no Censorship. We have the Freest and most lively Press anywhere in the western world. Check our blogs. other than the 2 words anything goes, as long as you’re ready and willing to face the music if somone sue you. That is our deterent. Also the Ombudsman will entertain all public complaint against the news items and once in a while reminding all people connected to the org. of their foremost responsibilities as the bearer of TRUTHS>>

Alecks I think this problem is not rocket science to be thought over since its blatancy is very obvious everyday. The state of your profession should not be repaired as per individual basis but as a whole. I understand that there’s a business aspect in journalism too but I think sensationalism has been given more weight now than before in order to maintain this one aspect rather than focus on the objectivity of every news that is being dished out to the public. It is ironic journalist groups are quick to react when countering something that they perceive as a threat to their absolute freedom of expression and yet takes a snail paced or ho-hum action to answer the public’s clamor for a more responsible journalism. The lack of check and balance within the National organization of journalist has contributed to this sorry state because nobody is willing to implement their own code of ethics and standards at the same time nobody is willing to be confronted by their own members should they be reprimanded. How will you change your own organizations? FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IS NOT ABSOLUTE but there is also something that is attached to this called RESPONSIBILITY.

The stupid question – SINO IPAPALIT NYO KAY GMA? ay sobra pong
nakakasuka, at hindi katangap-tangap na rationale, only blind followers will keep repeating this line, This country is in sorry state because some people allowed themselves to be fooled, cheated, and corrupted.

There we go again, pag di kampi sa inyo..ur calling them blind followers. Allow me to rephrase my Question kung nasusuka ka.
