The fall guy, huh? Well, let’s leave ‘Bert’ to fall, I’m sure he himself decided on that anyway when he inked the Venable contract. Or maybe they never expected the PCIJ to find out about it? Hah! Serves them right, then! The PCIJ’s message: Our eyes are on you!

But when ‘Bert’ does fall, that shouldn’t be the end of things. Every ounce of truth must be extracted from him, because this is another direct maneuver by GMA, and she must also be accountable for this treason!

The sad part is that these scandals and maneuverings are now being reflected in the micro- level: in the other gov’t agencies and the local gov’t units. Our national leadership is a joke, and our economy will soon follow it down the toilet if we don’t clean up our trash.

Even all the cronies of Marcos and Erap…even all the shady characters of the past administration….walang panama sa KASAMAAN, KASAKIMAN, KASINUNGALINGAN at KAKAPALAN ng pekeng pangulo at kanyang administrasyon.

I’d rather support this shouting shadowy smears than be one in hell with this present administration.

Yan ba naman ang kalibre ng isang National Security Adviser? Either sinungaling dahil ayaw ipagtapat ang nalalaman at may pinagtatakpan, o kaya ay talagang bobo dahil maraming “hindi alam” sa mga itinatanong sa kanya. Marami pang iba’t ibang uri ng pagkatao ang maibabansag sa kanya pero yun lang dalawang nabanggit ko na ang nasa isip ko ngayon. Naturingan pa manding graduate ng Ateneo de Davao U at UP. E bakit pipirma ng napakamahal na kontrata tapos hindi raw alam kung nabayaran na yung Venable? Napakalinaw naman ng provision na: “Work by Venable on behalf of the Philippine Government shall commence upon receipt of an initial retainer for the first three months of service.” Magsisimula ba naman ng service yung Venable kung hindi pa nila natatanggap yung initial retainer ($75,000 x 3)? Kung ganyan ang kalidad ng “best and brightest” ano na lang kung less than the best yung namumuno?

i agree with loyalty to people that was mentioned. ang kaso nga lang itong mga alipores ni arroyo e super loyal sila. sayang lang yung talino na ipinagkaloob sa kanila. pati nga si joker eh parang nanghinayang kay gonzales kasi naalala nya yung martial law days nila. magising na sana sa katotohanan ang mga secretaries at tongressmen.

The date of the contract itself is questionable. Just imagine GMA is under impeachment proceeding and yet they are COCKY enough to solicit a Lobbying Contract.

It is either they are arrogant and confident that the impeachment proceeding will not prosper OR that they already knew that the whole IMPEACHMENT showdown is just for a show.

Well, what can you expect from those greedy congressman. Siguro they themselves are promised to have a portion of the funds coming from the lobbying campaign in exchange for “No” to impeachment and “Yes” to CHACHA.

Norberto “Red Scare” Gonzales typifies those personalities comprising the inner circle of GMA. Arrogant (like Bunye), over-protective of the fake President, harp on everyone against their boss, but never lift a finger on the obvious misdeeds of their benefactor. Takot na takot mawalan ng trabaho.

To them I dare say, You feel that you’ve won but the nation’s destiny has been charted. Truth and justice will prevail in the end. May history be kind to you.

Question, does someone know the purpose of this senate blue ribbon committe hearing? in the aid of legislation pa rin ba? as what we’ve seen in the past, wala namang nangyari sa mga senate hearings na ganito, may na punish na ba? wala. worse, eh they can always retract their testimonies, ie Mawanay, Richard Garcia. I hope my former LSM classmate and ADMU schoolmate Gabby Claudio will accidentally read this piece.

My friend, be true to your Christian training in Lourdes School and Ateneo. Why are you toeing the line of GMA to protect herself from possible incrimination in the hot issue of the Venable contract? You are not being paid by Filipinos tax money to squander in making obviously biased phone calls to influence a member of the Senate to be soft on Norberto Gonzales. Why are you allowing yourself to be a party to a seeming cover-up, at the expense of Pinoy taxpayers? That is not the brand of people Lourdes and Ateneo produce!

Don’t you see the necessity of screening the National Security Adviser to ferret out the truth? Where is your nationalism? If there is anyone who should be anxious about the health of Mr. Gonzales, it should be your boss, GMA and you yourself and the way to really get Mr. Gonzales off the hook is to relieve him from his very excruciating position defending GMA by you or GMA herself volunteering the details of the deal (of course, I realize that GMA will never reveal her inner secrets). I say YOU because your call to Senator Richard Gordon revealed an apparent familiarity with this deal.

But, if indeed you are not aware of what this contract is all about, then why in heaven’s name were you trying to persuade Senator Gordon to abandon his pro-detention stance on Mr. Gonzales’ refusal to give direct answers to the questions of the Blue-Ribbon Committee? Loyalty to the Glory? Maging loyal ka naman sa katotohanan at sa taumbayan pare. Tingnan mo si Butch Abad and his wife Congresswoman Dina Abad, your younger schoolmates in ADMU. They know when to cut and they are loyal to the Filipino people and not to any particular individual.

If you know something about the deal, reveal it for the sake of truth and patriotism. Pwede ka pa maging dakila. On the other hand, if you do not know anything about the deal, then stop persuading the allies of GMA to change their position on the detention of the National Security Adviser because your ignorance on the topic of Venable makes your effort to persuade simply empty and pictures you as subservient.

Catch 22, ka-batch. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Because you insist in defending the indefensible.

A BACKGROUNDER ON SECRETARY NORBERTO B. GONZALES

They wanted to demean and humiliate him. One called him a man with a flawed character. Another said he was acting like a pimp. Still another questioned his qualifications for his post.

Indeed, they questioned his character, his patriotism, his intelligence and, in general, his fitness for his present position in the government.
From the start of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on September 21, the senators’ hostility towards him was palpable. In the course of the hearing, he was subjected to verbal abuse and made to taste their arrogance. Nasty, condescending and insulting remarks were thrown at him; and at the end of the hearing, he was cited for contempt and put be under Senate detention.

Just who is Secretary Norberto B. Gonzales, this man, whose character, patriotism, intelligence and fitness to serve as National Security Adviser the senators are questioning?

The Information and Communication Department of the Partido Demokratiko-Sosyalista ng Pilipinas (PDSP) offers the following background information on him:

· Sec. Gonzales is the leading social democratic leader in the country. He is the founding chairperson of the Partido Demokratiko-Sosyalista ng Pilipinas (PDSP), the country’s only non-communist ideologically-based political party and its sixth major party, producing two (2) congressmen, two (2) governors and 63 municipal and city mayors in last year’s local elections. His being a social democrat makes him a very staunch defender of democracy and, consequently, pet peeve of the communists and other extremist forces both from the left and the right.

· His love for his country and his people is indisputable. The 58-year old secretary has been engaged in the struggle for the emancipation of the country and the Filipino people from imperialism, dictatorship, poverty and social injustice for almost 40 years now—that is, since his youth days and practically his entire adult life.

· He is of humble origin, but he valued education. The third son of a fisherman, he was born in Balanga, Bataan where he completed his primary education, graduating on top of his class. He moved to Davao City to complete his secondary education and wrapped up a pre-med degree in Ateneo de Davao, under the guardianship of an elder brother who had earlier migrated in Mindanao. He tried to pursue a master’s degree in chemistry at UP Dilman but his involvement in the protest movement disrupted his post-bachelor study. Much, much later, he completed his Master’s degree in National Security Administration from the National Defense College.

· His involvement in patriotic causes can be traced back in 1967. He had then moved to Manila to pursue a master’s degree in chemistry at UP Diliman. He was attracted to and joined a movement established by Raul Manglapus and called Barangay ng mga Hari or Baranghari for short. The rise of social unrest in the late 60s during the second term of Ferdinand Marcos got Gonzales more deeply involved in the protest movement, causing him to drop out from his masteral studies. It was at this time that he met then Romeo J. Intengan, Jr., a young surgeon who also came from the state university. The young and idealistic Gonzales took part in group protests supported by the Jesuit priests, Brothers, and scholastics.

· Gonzales, aside from being idealistic and patriotic, was also a skillful and diligent organizer. Starting as organizer of urban poor, labor and youth, he joined hands with Dr. Intengan in forming the Kilusan ng mga Demokratikong Sosyalista ng Pilipinas (KDSP) which had mass bases in Metro Manila, Iloilo and Davao. The suspension of the writ of habeas corpus and the subsequent imposition of Martial Law in 1972 pushed Gonzales and his fellow activists to continue their work underground. They transformed KDSP into a political party and renamed it PDSP on May 1, 1973, with Gonzales as its founding chairperson. Gonzales then was only 26.

· Subsequently, in the rest of the 70s, Gonzales and Intengan led PDSP in engaging in organizing other progressive moderate elements of Philippine society, and forged alliances with prominent anti-Marcos politicians. They initiated the formation of the Katipunan ng Bayan para sa Kalayaan (KABAKA) which had Sen. Jovito Salonga as Chairperson, Sen. Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo as Vice-Chairperson and Intengan as Secretary-General.

· In general, the PDSP cadres, during the Martial Law period were aligned with the democratic opposition. During this time, when being able to organize even a small symposium was already considered heroic, the PDSP cadres organized mass actions for prominent opposition personalities like Salonga, Sen. Raul Manglapus, Sen. Gerardo “Gerry” Roxas and Sen. Eva Estrada-Kalaw. This partnership with the opposition led into the formation of Laban ng Bayan (LABAN). Benigno Aquino, Jr,, then a political detainee, wanted to run in the Interim Batasang Pambansa (IBP) election of 1978. He approached Soc Rodrigo to seek the support of KABAKA as his campaign machinery. However, the leadership of PDSP and KABAKA, together with its allies, decided instead to establish Laban to serve as Aquino’s campaign machinery.

On 6 April 1978, the eve of the IBP election, PDSP provided the cadres that spearheaded the noise barrage in Metro Manila. When the election proved to be a sham, being marred with massive ballot-switching, intimidation, and outright physical violence on the part of the martial law authorities against the LABAN operatives, giving the ruling party, Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL), spurious claim to all the assembly seats in Metro Manila, PDSP cadres, again, spearheaded the prayer march-rally on 9 April 1978 in protest of the electoral fraud. This mass action resulted in the arrest and detention of half of the leadership of PDSP, including Gonzales and Intengan.

· After release from detention, Gonzales employed again his skill in organizing and alliance-building in 1979 when he started establishing linkage with Nur Misuari’s Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). Earlier, he had recruited and made the Sultan of Sulu a friend of PDSP. It was the Sultan who brought him to Saudi Arabia and, there, introduced him and Misuari to each other.

Gonzales’ dialogue with the Muslim leader led to an agreement between PDSP and MNLF to cooperate politically and militarily. It also resulted in the strong affinity between PDSP and Muslim leaders that has lasted to date.

The new friendship between PDSP and MNLF became helpful for the former when its leaders had to go into exile in 1980. They sought refuge in Jampiras, Sabah under the auspices of their Muslim brothers from MNLF. The PDSP cadres stayed in Sabah until 1982 when some of them moved to Spain.

· The PDSP leaders’ host in Spain was the country’s social democratic party, the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE). Again it was largely through Gonzales’ skill at forging linkages that friendly relationship between PDSP and PSOE was established. While in Spain, he started working out PDSP’s membership in the Socialist International, the worldwide umbrella organization of all social democratic parties.
Gonzales stayed in Spain until the dictator was booted out through a people power uprising in 1986.

· When Corazon Aquino was installed in power in February 1986, she tapped the country’s leading social democratic leader to form part of the panel tasked to negotiate with the MNLF. This was a well-advised move on the part of the new President given Gonzales’ connections with Nur Misuari and his group. Gonzales, as member of the negotiating panel, brought Pres. Aquino to Jolo and introduced her and the MNLF leader to each other. Two years of subsequent talks led to a ceasefire between government and the Moro rebel group, which culminated in a peace agreement on 2 September 1996.

· After his stint as member of the peace panel with MNLF, Gonzales continued to help the Aquino government in achieving and maintaining stability in other ways. Specifically, he employed his coalition-building skills and his extensive connections within the democratically-inclined organized labor and peasant sectors to consolidate both sectors towards the collective defense and promotion of democracy.

· Under the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Gonzales has again been tapped by government first as Presidential Adviser for Special Concerns, then as National Security Adviser, later as Presidential Chief of Staff and now back as National Security Adviser since February this year. His comrades in PDSP consider the following as among the highlights of his services to the incumbent government:

Ø Initiated efforts resulting in presidential proclamation of public lands for the urban poor in various communities in Metro Manila;

Ø Negotiated and concluded with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) the Implementing Guidelines on the Humanitarian, Rehabilitation and Development Aspects of the GRP-MILF Tripoli Agreement on Peace of 2001; and

Ø Undertook back channel efforts for the peace negotiation between government and the NDF and eventually drafted the proposal for shift in government’s counter-insurgency strategy.

I’m not impressed with his qualifications so as to consider him a patriot. Gonzales is no different from Jose de Venecia- both used management skills to further their own interests. And for the life of me, it is only this year that I ‘ve heard of Partido Demokratiko Sosyalista ng Pilipinas. The name sounds similarly with Jose Sison’s National Democratic Front.

Gonzales has insulted the Senate, he therefore deserves contempt, otherwise he remains under custody of the Senate until he answers the questions.

I’d rather stick it out with Gonzales than some Senators who are really a joke to their own institution. But what can I do, this is a free society. So I have to accept the fact that we have people like, well, you know who in the Senate. So far for me, the only people that make sense in their pronouncements and who I can consider as future presidents are Roxas and Recto.

Bensgr8, I am glad you did not say anything foul about the more influential senators like Nene Pimentel, Joker Arroyo, Manny Villar and Franklin Drilon or baka nakalimutan mo lang? They are all critical of the man you have cast your lot with.

In your first, unedited version, you mentioned the name of Senator Gordon as being one of those you think make sense in their pronouncements then you deleted his name in your edited version. Why? You probably recalled that when a trusted defender of GMA Secretary Gabby Claudio called Senator Gordon, the Senator begged off from abandoning his position in favor of detaining the uncooperative NSA.

It appears that for you, people who make sense are those who don’t stake their reputation to painstakingly draw out the truth at all costs. Those who simply let things pass by without complications, without criticisms, without rebuke, without accountability. All mercy. No justice. All gain, no pain. All glory, no guts (takot kay glory?).. Fancy and dandy, we go to party kind of stuff!
