SENATOR-JUDGES Vicente Sotto, Antonio Trillanes IV, and Manny Villar cast their votes for the conviction of Chief Justice Renato Corona, adding three more votes to the 16 votes that already sealed the chief magistrate’s fate.

The three senators said that Corona is mandated to meet the high standards expected of the Chief Justice of the highest court in the land, and that he cannot argue good faith because he was in possession of “vast legal knowledge and wisdom to interpret the law in spirit and in content.”

“He must have the unique moral integrity and moral character to render himself impervious to corruption and political pressure,” Trillanes said.

Villar for his part said he had difficulty arriving at the decision to cast a guilty vote, but said this was based on the admission of Corona that he owned peso and dollar accounts that he had not declared in his statement of assets liaibilities and net worth.

I was not able to fully comprehend of how Manny Villar had explained why he had chosen to convict Corona! He simply laid out his own issues which I think defines his credibility to make the judgment. If he had thought that Corona should be acquitted then he should stick to his choice and explain himself CLEARLY and not simply say that he chose to convict corona but explain that his choice was based on the lack of information! In general, I think Villar was not able to stick with his own beliefs and was led to be swayed by the said “misinformation of the media”! As the senate president, I think he should have stuck with his belief that Corona was a “nice” guy like the way he was emphasizing it instead of stating a conviction but explaining otherwise (parang ginamit niya ang explanation time niya upang idepensa ang kanyang credibilidad rather than explaining WHY he chose to convict Corona!

I am urging PCIJ to please, please push for an investigation challenging all the senators who voted to convict Corona to make public their SALN. I truly believe that these senators did not also declare a transparent and factual SALN. And the same thing too with the Congressmen especially Tupas of Iloilo. Please do this research and reveal it to the public. Thank you in advance!
