THE Philippine Press Institute expressed “grave concern” over what it said were government attempts to curtail civil rights, including the right of expression and to assemble peacefully.

"Our commitment is to the truth," the statement issued by PPI Chairman Amado P. Macasaet reads. "And while we have the room, however being constricted, nothing will bar us from pursuing our duty."

The organization of newspaper publishers issued the statement hours after President Arroyo declared a state of national emergency amid a destabilization attempt against her government. She had warned the media against publishing rumors and baseless information, while Palace officials hinted of a possible takeover of public utilities, especially media.

The PPI’s statement:

The Supreme Court ruled after the siege of Malacanang on May 21, 2001, that a declaration of a state of national emergency does not add or substract a whit to and from the powers of the Presidency. The declaration, the court said, but constitutes a statement of fact, a description of prevailing conditions that require the commander-in-chief to call out the military to suppress lawless violence.

So we view with grave concern government attempts to curtail the citizenry’s constitutionally guaranteed rights, including the right of expression and the right to assemble peacefully to seek redress of grievances.

Permits to rallies marking the 20th anniversary of the Edsa 1 People Power Revolt have been revoked. At this very moment police and military officials are talking about arresting alleged participants and purported supporters of a supposed coup attempt. Palace officials are threatening to take over public utilities, especially media.

Such naked assaults on civil liberties should be condemned. Twenty-years ago, the people threw out a dictatorship. We should not allow – nay, we should resist – a return to those dark days of repression. We are not destabilizers or coup plotters. Our duty in the media is to report as truthfully as we could, guided by our best lights.

We are threatened with closure, and those who fear the truth might temporarily succeed in stilling our voices. Lies, however, will in time be exposed.

But enough of the counsels of fear and despair. Our commitment is to the truth. And while we have the room, however being constricted, nothing will bar us from pursuing our duty.

So here again showbiz-politics and “statement” arms races once again grabs headlines whilst a 1,800-casualty tragedy languishes on Page 2.

Pinoy nga naman talaga.

think the majority share your insights albeit ur indifference benigno.. kaya nga walang mass actions like the ones we used to see during edsa one and two.. people simply don’t care anymore who leads us.. much of the their attentions are focused to just to eake out a meager living and provice for their families.. i guess they also dont mind that the little money they earn is being eaten bit by bit by a goverment who overly tax the masses while wantonly spends the loot they collect.. i guess they wont mind that majority of their mothers and fathers have to go abroad at the risk of life and limb, not to mention sanity just to be able to provide for their children.. and i guess the wont mind at all when they see all those politicians strutting new SUV’s everynow and then, being implicated in coruption charges but not getting convicted not to politicos who are self confessed jueteng lords chumming up with the president herself.. hmmm sad as i would like to admit it.. we have lots of people like u benigno here in the philippines.. thats why we are in this rut.. people just dont care anymore… “in the land of the blind.. the one eyed lady is king” madam cyclops guess ur it..

Greeting.

I think this thing should had been done a long time ago…
Filipinos have enjoyed too much democracy that even the democracy they say they are protecting is the one they are destroying…

I believe what the president is doing.. sometimes democracy must be controlled in order to save it from the hands who are more eager and corrupt to be back on power once more..

to all the publisher.. this is the question that i been longing to ask you all along.. do you really know how to love a country,… coz i dont think that you philippines… your only interested printing bad things .. bad things that means more magazines sold.. shame on you all..

Alecks, the miron has the objectivity that players do not have.

Coldfeet, you’re right. This has gone way out of proportion. We keep harping on the abuses of government but cannot look inward and acknowledge our own responsibilities as citizens. Mea culpa…

jester,

kung useless talaga kami ibig sabihin hindi na kelangan ang mga dolyar na pinapadala ng nakararami sa amin – ganun ba yon? we also have a stake in the country…you, or anyone else, have no right to call us useless.

The Daily Tribune has just been raided and all printed papers of todays edition had been confiscated. Where is the freedom of the press now? So were do we really draw the line?

Some would say that our media only reports the bad things, sana manood o magbasa muna kayo bago kayo humusga. I hope you try reading our dailies from cover to cover. Let’s not tow the line of the administration that all we read and watch in our news reports are the negative things that happen everyday.

We, the viewers and readers are discerning and intelligent enough.

You hit on the nail head MitaMS, cold feet, Benigno! Mirons are just as importatnt as the players. We are all a part of this country though we exercise our choices in different way. If Alecks and company choose to be very involved as players then so be it. Thats their choices and we can just respect them. At the same time, the mirons has made their choices and that should be respected as well. Positively, all sides are very important for our country and exercising our own choices is very healthy. Hindi naman pwedeng lahat tayo ay main protagonist on this crazy political game that is happening in the country eh….

— agree thats the advantage of not being in the philippines.. u dont feel the hardships that we that are living here feel.. me back door kayo in a sense na if things go wrong an dun kayo sa malayo just looking in and being objective and all.. kami dito lang.. pag mali ang pamamalakad ng government we are the ones who bear the brunt of its full weight.. were the ones who are squeezed into non existence dahil sa mga taxes.. were the ones directly affected by its policies… emotional?? hmm think nga were too indiferrent..passive people easily bullied by our elite masters.. so what if u send dollars?? we pay taxes… its our taxes that makes this government tick.. i guess that gives us a say as to how the goverment should be run right?

Coldfeet, you’re right. This has gone way out of proportion. We keep harping on the abuses of government but cannot look inward and acknowledge our own responsibilities as citizens. Mea culpa…
—-yup your right.. what we are reflect what kinda leaders we elect… thats the sad fact.. and yup we should look inward.. but hey were not the ones running the show now are we?? more important its our leaders that should look inward.. if meron pa silang delicadeza and honor that is.. they should be the ones who should lead the flock.. were like a big family.. if your dad is patanga tangahan, pa bingi bingihan or worse magnanakaw.. ninanakawan pati sariling kapamilya.. do u expect his chirldren to turn out well?? simple logic lang.. problem sa atin we always look at the grad scale of things itong simpleng bagay lang di natin mapagana…

In a sense we are all “mirons” in a grand scheme of things. The main actors or players are the same people who keep changing roles. One day the other plays the bad guy, the next he’s playing the bad guy still. Screams all we want, like screaming in the middle of the jungle. But then again, the plot changes and the roles maybe changing and just hoping for the better.

Hindi lang si Garci ang may kasalanan… Lahat tayo…

This situation brings to us the question of “have we done our share/best in helping the country change?”

At the very start of the process, election, ano ba ang ginawa natin? have we participated in voters’ education para kahit papano matulungan ang mga tao na maunawaan ang kahalagahan ng boto nila?

What did we do to prevent electoral fraud?

Walk This Way declared his support for Arroyo: “Long live the midget.” Notes from the peanut gallery expressed exasperation: “Oh, please. Enough of this crap. I have better things to do.
